Former EFL striker Jon Parkin has announced his retirement from cricket at the age of 43.Parkin made his name as a professional footballer, but has consistently played cricket.Parkin was a keen cricketer for many yearsBut after scoring 133 not out for Darfield’s second XI against Green Moor, the former forward has called it a day.Parkin has become a very successful podcast host of Undr The Cosh, which sees Parkin, Chris ‘Browny’ Brown and Chris J Brown interview players and managers from the world of football. But away from that, Parkin was a keen cricketer, before he decided to walk away. And he’s also considering packing in playing golf as well.Speaking to the Barnsley Chronicle about his decision to walk away from cricket, he said: “I’m crap. I’ve not scored many runs, so I’ve thrown my teddy out of the cot and that’s me done.“I had a new knee in November, so I am costing them 20 runs in the field anyway, so I have to score 20 to break even.“I only turn up once every month or so. I do after dinner speaking on a Saturday and Barnsley town centre is good on a Saturday afternoon now.“It’s been a long time coming scoring some runs and it didn’t make me change my mind. “I still play golf, but I am bang average at that too so I might knock that on the head as well.”Parkin developed a bit of a legendary reputation as a playerAs a footballer player, the Barnsley-born forward enjoyed 21 years and included him playing for 14 clubs. In 586 league appearances, he scored 190 times and played from the Championship to the National League North. He did have one year as a Premier League player, but never made an appearance for Stoke City in the top-flight.Parkin’s main success came with Preston North End and Forest Green Rovers, while at the end of his career, he had a great two years with York City in the National League North before retiring in 2019.Parkin’s careerParkin was known as ‘The Beast’ when he played football due to his no-nonsense approach to the game.As a player, he weighed 17 stone and his pre-match meal would consist of fishcakes, burgers and a fry-up.Parkin scored 221 goals during his playing career in all competitionsHe always took the mickey out of himself as well, but despite that, Parkin’s record is impressive, and anyone racking up over 650 games in all competitions deserves praise. And when he announced his retirement on X, Parkin was quick to poke fun at his own expense. His post read: “It’s come to that time in my career where no matter how hard I try, I simply can’t run the 100m in under ten seconds any more.“I always knew that once my pace went that I could never be the same player so I’ve decided it’s time to hang the boots up.“I think it’s around 670 games and 225 goals, which ain’t too bad for a fat lad from Barnsley.”
