(AP Photo)US President Donald Trump on Wednesday responded to reports of NATO member Poland shooting down multiple Russian drones in what European officials described as a deliberate provocation by Moscow which has put America’s NATO allies in Europe on edge.In a short post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!” The US president’s response came after about 10 hours since Poland officially announced that several Russian drones had entered its territory over the course of many hours and were shot down with the help of fighter jets sent by NATO.The incident marks the first time a member of the Western military alliance (NATO) has fired shots during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which started in February 2022.While briefing the parliament about the incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said it was “the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two,” however, he added that there’s “no reason to believe we’re on the brink of war.”The Russian drone incursion in Poland’s territory, which is a member-state of NATO, highlights the striking escalation of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine which Trump had promised to pause as he returns to the White House. However, after a high-profile meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska last month, there appears to be little progress towards ending the conflict.Officials informed that in order to shoot down Russian drones, Polish F-16 fighter jets, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS surveillance planes, and NATO mid-air refuelling aircraft were scrambled in the operation which continued from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning (local time), Reuters reported.Story continues below this adAccording to a statement by Poland President Karol Nawrocki, Trump spoke to him on Wednesday afternoon, as Nawrocki said, “Today’s talks confirmed allied unity.”French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke to Trump about the ″worrying developments in the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine in particular following the incursion of Russian drones in Poland.″(with inputs from CNN, Reuters)Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd
