A poet and social worker, she coordinates the Student Police Cadet Programme, mentoring 45 cadets.The spirit of Teacher’s Day was celebrated with grandeur at the 6th Teachers’ Excellence Award Function, organised by Manav Mangal Group of Schools, Mohali in collaboration with Dr G C Mishra Memorial Educational and Charitable Trust. The event, held at Manav Mangal Smart School, Sector 88, Mohali, recognised 11 exceptional educators from Tricity, Punjab, and Haryana for their outstanding contribution in the field of education.The awards were presented by Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chancellor of Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu, in the presence of guest of honour Dr S K Mishra, vice-chancellor, Sardar Beant Singh State University (SBSSU), Gurdaspur.A special highlight was the recognition of not just school teachers, but also college and university faculty members.This year’s awardees included Bhim Singh (Panchkula), Rumani Ahuja (Ludhiana), Rajesh Kumar Arya (Chandigarh), Prof Jagat Bhushan (Panjab University), Dr Ranjay Vardhan (PGGC-42, Chandigarh), Rajinder Singh (Bathinda), Parveen Kumari (Chandigarh), Manika Sharma (Chandigarh), Sangeeta Popli (Panchkula), and Seema Anand (Chandigarh).Dr Harpreet Kaur, principal, Shri Guru Harkrishan Model School, Chandigarh, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her remarkable contribution to education.Among the awardees, Rajesh Kumar Arya, a visually impaired music teacher at the Institute for the Blind, Chandigarh, stood out for his resilience. With nearly three decades of service, Arya has never allowed his disability to limit him. Reflecting on his challenges, Arya told The Indian Express, “Mere sapno mein bhi andheri raat hoti hai… main yuddhrat hoon paristhiti se 2-2 hath hoti hai. (There is no darkness even in my dreams… I am in the middle of a war, battling my circumstances) ” Known for his empathy, Arya trains students for cultural programmes and art festivals, while encouraging them to live independently.While Rajinder Singh, who is a primary teacher at Government Primary School, Kothe Inder Singh Wale, saved his school from near closure to a thriving institution. When he joined in 2015, the school had just 33 students. Today, it has 240, including children from 16 nearby villages. Using his personal funds, he built a library, park, kitchen garden, computer lab, and art room. A recipient of the National Award, he also pioneered English as the medium of instruction in Bathinda district and established six smart libraries named after astronaut Kalpana Chawla.Story continues below this adAnother awardee, Parveen Kumari, who is a Social Science teacher at Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, Chandigarh, recently got the National Award. Serving since 2010, she has consistently delivered 100 per cent results in Class 10 board exams for five consecutive years. Kumari has contributed educational content for PM Vidya channels, DIKSHA portal, and Chandigarh’s DTH platform, and also heads her school’s award-winning Eco Club.
