Well, State Department just warned making fun of Charlie Kirk might get you deported

Wait 5 sec.

In the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk killing, there has been a flood of opinions — some expressing grief and concern, others expressing sardonic delight. Now, the Donald Trump administration has warned that if an immigrant dares to join in on the latter, they might face possible deportation. The news came officially from Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who took to X to issue the warning of repercussions for immigrants who join in on the mockery. Landau stated, “I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country.” The Trump administration has been focused on mass deportation since the very first day of his second term. His focus has since extended far beyond bad actors in the expatriate community. Trump’s scope has now shifted toward using deportation to enforce his broader agenda. If he does follow through with targeting people who tweeted in ways his administration doesn’t approve of, it would align with what he did to college students who protested against Israel and were not American citizens. According to The Hill, Trump has overseen the revocation of 6,000 student visas so far. Charlie Kirk’s killing was tragic. Those celebrating it are certainly not doing so in good faith. Regardless of what he said — and he did have outlandish takes — Kirk always presented his ideas publicly in a way that respected democracy and the U.S. Constitution. The tragedy lies in the fact that Kirk never went beyond provocative statements. There’s an argument to be made that his tragic murder should teach us to be more tolerant of people who say things we dislike or wouldn’t want to hear. As the saying goes: free speech only matters when someone says things we don’t like. At present, influential commentators from both the left and the right have strongly condemned the growing trend of political violence. Sure, a few people have slipped up here and there — but swift consequences and push back have also followed. The unified message right now is that people must handle their differences civilly. Trump shoehorning his mass deportation agenda into this moment might only fuel further resentment when the message should be tolerance. There will always be someone who doesn’t agree with your political opinions. Going further, there might even be those who actually insult you. But words should never inspire violence. If we cheer on the killing of people who say things we don’t like, there will be nothing left of society. As things stand, the suspect in the Kirk killing has not yet been found. Conservative billionaires, like Bill Ackman, have offered rewards for anyone who helps locate the man, alongside an additional bounty from the FBI. There’s a united front, by all legal authorities around the country, to locate the fugitive. So far, a picture of the man has been released, as well as a couple of videos showing him making his way out of the university campus. No manifesto, or motives, have been found by anyone so far. Hopefully, the person responsible for this tragic moment in history will eventually face justice.
