Arne Slot says there were “a lot of arguments” for substituting Alexis Mac Allister at half-time in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Burnley – with Atletico Madrid in mind.Mac Allister was perhaps a surprise starter at Turf Moor after playing 90 minutes for Argentina despite manager Lionel Scaloni admitting he wasn’t “100 percent fit.”But with Dominik Szoboszlai kept at right-back, the No. 10 joined Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz in an unchanged midfield. That was until a nasty challenge from Burnley‘s Lesley Ugochukwu and an early substitution for Milos Kerkez, which both factored into Slot’s decision to bring Mac Allister off at half-time.Speaking to journalists after Liverpool’s late 1-0 victory, Slot allayed fears of a new injury and explained why the midweek Champions League opener against Atletico played a part in his thinking. “It was a bit of both,” he said when asked if Mac Allister’s early exit was tactical or fitness-related.“It’s similar to Alex [Isak], but in a completely different way.“He missed a lot of pre-season, so he is ready for one game a week, maybe 70 to 90 [minutes]. He played 90 for Argentina and he was really tired after 70.“So he doesn’t have the right buildup towards playing three games a week 90 minutes.“It was always sure today that I would take him off after 60 minutes for him to be able to be back on the pitch again Wednesday and Saturday.“And I already made one substitution in the first half, so if I then take him off on 60 minutes that would be my second one, then if I want to make [changes at] 75 in the end I can do nothing anymore.“So that, combined with the fact that the tackle was a tackle that he felt – and I’m not surprised by the fact he felt that tackle, by the way – [was why he came off at half-time].“He said it was fine and good enough to go on, although he limped a lot. So that’s more his mentality I think than it was that he could actually perform at his best for 50 minutes longer.“[It was] the combination of him being injured, me not wanting to lose the second substitution after 60 minutes – and us not playing so well, so bring Dom to the midfield, more players that can attack the box – a lot of arguments, but partly tactical.”
