New director Mandrew Kwan after waiting for years finally has the chance to direct his first film THE REMNANT, revealing the origin of the story is from a documentary he made. After talking with director Mandrew Kwan before the production, he rewrote the script for hercourtesy of mingpao.com The "post-80s" new director Mandrew Kwan Man Him used to focus on filming short films and documentaries. After many years of waiting, he finally had the opportunity to direct his first film THE REMNANT (NGOK YUN DONG DOH), exploring many social issues such as rehabilitated people, unwed mothers, drug trafficking, and real estate hegemony, hoping to make the audience think about the right and wrong issues in the new social environment. He described completing this work with limited resources as a great training and hoping that more works will be released one after another to continue to pursue his film dream. In 2008 Kwan Man Hin co-directed the movie "Coffee, or Tea" with his teacher and film critic Shu Kei (Yip Kin Heng). He was still a student at the Academy of Performing Arts at the time. The film still has yet to be officially released. After graduation he started a production company, focusing on making documentaries and dramatic short films.THE REMNANT was Kwan Man Hin's first officially solo directed film. "Even if I opened a production company, I still really wanted to make a movie in my heart. I have been storing nutrients through filming work, hoping to make a movie with feelings in the future. THE REMNANT was derived from these nutrients." The film revolved around the story of the lower classes of society. Kwan Man Hin said that because he made a short film many years ago, he came into contact with many people of this class. Among them he met a mob boss who had been imprisoned for murder, and after being released from prison he ran a Tai Pai Tong to help him rehabilitate. The location was where the old and the new intersected, To Kwa Wan. The old building near the eatery have all been bought out, only with the building of the mob boss' shop no one dared to claim until the lease was up. At the time he learned the story behind the building buy out and thought that if he turned this story a little more heroic and made into a movie, it would be rather interesting. The movie changed the story from the original Tai Pai Tong to a laundry that was closer to the community. Kwan Man Hin believed that the owner of the laundry could see what happened to each customer from the clothes, so he decided to use this character background as the story development. He said that he has a very close connection with every actor in the film. "At first, I never thought about Keung Ho Man would play the role of the laundry owner, but because I couldn't imagine it the effect was pretty good. He played it with great weight and aura. Yip Tung's scene was specifically rewritten after meeting and talking with her, so she often joked that it was her true nature performance. Wan Yeung Ming's character image was very deep, so he deliberately went to a character image that was completely different from what he had played before, and turned it into a comedy element of the whole film."Kwan Man Hin said that his movie was absolutely not a mob movie, only that the story contained mob elements to display the boldness of a mobster. Filmed from the perspective of a genre film, the story leaned towards realism, and various problems are brought out by renewal and whitewashing. "It involves how society is updated and replaced, how people adapt to a new environment, the story and characters occur in a changing environment. Facing these environments would be very frightening and uneasy, and we must stick to the past or face the new environment; now this city is also facing this problem, do we still have to talk about the Spirit of the Lion Rock and let everyone know that we are all able to endure? Or do we have to accept the new environment? These were all questions that needed to be thought about often, and there were many views of the old and new schools written in the film, who was right and who was wrong? Just let the audience think for themselves."Kwan Man Hin felt that as a new director, he indeed had many stories that he wanted to tell. He wanted to add a lot of content into his first movie, so he had to start writing the first draft then slowly narrow them down. "I am not young anymore; I have accumulated a lot of things I want to tell, more than ordinary young directors. However ultimately due to limited resources, I couldn't say too much. This time the filming time of this movie was only 16 days, and the additional shoot only took half a day to complete. I even had two action scenes have to shoot, so I have to shoot concisely and clearly. There shouldn't be too many rough edges, which is a good thing for me as a first-time director. It is a very good training to remind yourself not to have so many branches."Kwan Man Hin felt that short films and movies each have their fun parts. After graduation he has been waiting for the opportunity to make a movie, but for a while he felt that there was no chance and originally planned to give up. "Because I started to get older, I felt that I should not do things I was not sure about, and I did feel lost and confused. I didn't know what I could do. After I completed this movie, I really want to thank the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers." Releasing his first movie in the cold film industry winter, he felt that it was not a bad thing. Because there may not be many choices, the movie might be able to attract the audience to watch. The goal was to continue to release films one after another, only then would the movie dream be realized.
