The pearls of Hyderabad, long celebrated for their brilliance and craftsmanship, are now being considered to be sent for Geographical Indication (GI) tag recognition. The move comes close on the heels of the city’s lac bangles securing the prestigious tag.Known worldwide for their lustre, quality, and intricate artistry, Hyderabad Pearls have been central to the city’s identity as the ‘Pearl City of India’. Securing the GI tag is expected to not only protect the city’s centuries-old pearl legacy but also provide global recognition to its jewellery heritage and improve the visibility of local artisans. The application for Hyderabad Pearls is being facilitated by Resolute4IP in collaboration with Mandadi Sreeha Reddy, Nodal Officer for Toys Industry, GI and VVMP, Government of Telangana. The Hyderabad-Secunderabad Pearls and Jewellery Merchants Association is supporting the effort along with the Telugu Pearl Merchant Association.Commenting on the development, Subhajit Saha, head of Legal and IPR, Resolute Group of Companies and founder, Resolute4IP, said, “After the success of Narayanpet Sarees and lac bangles, it is only fitting that Hyderabad Pearls receive the GI tag. This recognition will not only safeguard the tradition but also create new economic opportunities for pearl artisans and traders, while strengthening Hyderabad’s global identity as the Pearl City.”Published - September 15, 2025 05:11 pm IST
