Charges filed in Tepe murders as suspect’s history with victim comes to light

An ex is at the center of the Tepe double murder, according to Ohio authorities, who have not publicly outlined a motive but call the murders a targeted act connected to one of the victim’s past relationships. On January 10, police arrested Michael David McKee, 39, victim Monique Tepe‘s ex-husband, in the shooting deaths of Monique, 39, and her husband, Spencer Tepe, 37, at their Columbus home on Dec. 30, 2025. McKee’s arrest is a major development in an investigation that has captured headlines and viral interest nationwide. A “person of interest,” which authorities allege is McKee, was seen walking near the Tepe residence in Columbus’s Weinland Park neighborhood between roughly 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on the day of the killings. Reports say investigators later linked a vehicle seen near the Tepe’s home to McKee. McKee had been living out of state. McKee and Monique’s relationship Court documents say McKee and Monique divorced in 2017. Monique later married Spencer, a popular dentist in Columbus. Monique and Spencer had two young children, who were found unharmed during a welfare check that led to the discovery of Spencer and Monique’s bodies. Police have said there were no signs of forced entry. Reports say the children are in the care of relatives. Prosecutors have not publicly detailed McKee’s alleged motive, and it’s still unclear how McKee allegedly entered the home. According to a review of American Board of Surgery records by Thibodeau, McKee completed medical training but was not board-certified in either vascular or general surgery. Thibodeau said this could limit where a physician can work, what procedures they are permitted to perform, and how long they may remain employed in certain facilities. McKee moved frequently in recent years, with medical positions in Nevada, California, and Illinois. Repeatedly relocating with frequent job changes over a short period can sometimes signal professional or personal instability, Thibodeau noted. There are no publicly confirmed allegations of professional misconduct against McKee at this time. Thibodeau also said sources close to McKee report he became increasingly isolated after his divorce from Monique in 2017. Monique and McKee had no children. McKee’s arrest After spotting McKee’s vehicle in surveillance footage, police arrested him on January 10, 2026, in Rockford, Illinois, nearly 500 miles away from Columbus, and charged him with two counts of murder. Authorities upgraded those charges to premeditated aggravated murder the next day. He is currently awaiting extradition to Ohio, where he is expected to face arraignment in Franklin County. An Illinois judge has scheduled an extradition hearing; McKee has not yet entered a plea. Friends and colleagues described Spencer and Monique as devoted parents and respected professionals. A public visitation and funeral service held in early January drew hundreds of mourners. Authorities have said the investigation remains active and that additional evidence will be presented once McKee is extradited to Ohio. Key questions—including how the suspect entered the home, and the last time Monique and McKee were in contact—remain unanswered as the investigation moves forward.
