San Jose Earthquakes are close to a deal to sign former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea forward Timo Werner, talkSPORT understands.Werner has only played 13 minutes for RB Leipzig this season and was informed over the summer that he is not part of their plans.Werner is set to leave Leipzig and head to AmericaGettyThe German international returned to his home country at the end of last season following a loan spell at Spurs. But since then, he has not started a single game in any competition, coming off the bench three times for Leipzig.Of those three, two of those have been late one-minute cameos too, as the club sticks to their stance that he will be playing little to no part. That appears to have now led to another exit from the club this winter, following a departure in 2020 and 2024. Werner left Leipzig for Chelsea for £47million six years ago, before heading out on loan to north London last campaign. And now, his third exit looks set to be across the pond. MLS side San Jose Earthquakes have been on the lookout for a striker and they want to give the out-of-favour star a chance. The 29-year-old would fill a designated position – a position for three players considered outside of a club’s salary cap – for the Quakes, who will still have one spot left for the rest of the window.San Jose finished tenth in the MLS Western Conference last season, narrowly missing out on a place in the play-offs.They will hope that the addition of a European star like Werner will help boost their hopes of improving next term.Werner hasn’t scored a goal since ending his torrid second Spurs spellGettyAnd he’s now heading to the USA after struggling for minutes in Germany, playing just 13 minutes in three appearancesGettyWhy did Werner leave Spurs? Werner originally joined Spurs in January 2024 on loan, before being re-signed on another temporary deal in the summer. But that spell was less successful and Ange Postecoglou spoke publicly about his disappointment with the German. Postecoglou labelled his performance against Rangers in the Europa League as ‘unacceptable’ after substituting him at half time. And his Spurs career never managed to pick up again after that, with injuries also hampering his second spell at the club.It meant he returned to Leipzig just days after winning the Europa League – leaving after scoring just three times in 41 appearances.Things haven’t got much better for Werner since his move back to Germany either, leaving his career at a standstill.Werner joined Chelsea for over £40million but failed to live up to expectationsPAWerner’s recent strugglesWerner has scored over 150 goals across his time in the Premier League and Bundesliga, picking up 57 Germany caps too.He has netted 113 goals in just 216 games in all competitions for Leipzig throughout his different spells at the club. But after a fast start at Stamford Bridge six years ago, he ended up only scoring 23 times for Chelsea in two years. And now, Werner finds himself on a long goal drought, failing to find the back of the net at all since October 2024.His last goal contribution of any kind was an assist for Tottenham in a 1-1 draw against Fulham in December 2024.It leaves him in desperate need of a fresh start and San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS could be the destination for him to do so.
