Dominik Szoboszlai apologises for bizarre backheel – but insists “football happens”

Dominik Szoboszlai apologised to his Liverpool team-mates after an overly confident error to hand Barnsley their goal in Monday’s 4-1 win in the FA Cup.Szoboszlai had already put the hosts 1-0 up with a stunning strike from range when, having done the hard part in regaining possession, he handed Barnsley their equaliser.Despite an open field in front of him on his favoured right foot, the No. 8 attempted to back-heel the ball towards goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili under pressure.PLAYER RATINGSLiverpool 4-1 Barnsley: Player Ratings – How did we rate Szoboszlai? But fumbling his attempt, Szoboszlai simply gifted the ball to former Liverpool academy midfielder Adam Phillips to fire in for 1-1."Sorry to the team, I made it hard for us"Dominik Szoboszlai reflects on his error for Barnsley's goal and walks @LiamMacdevitt through his brilliant strike for Liverpool's opener ?? @tntsports & @discoveryplusUK pic.twitter.com/0mjePEqNEy— Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) January 12, 2026Fortunately the result ensured that mistake meant for little, but the Hungarian was still reminded of it in his post-match interview with TNT Sports.“Sorry to the team again, I made it hard for us, with an easy mistake I would say,” he admitted.“But football happens, we move on and take the next round.”There was a sense of complacency in Szoboszlai’s slip-up, but there certainly wasn’t in the way he took his ninth-minute opener.“Finally I got to my position,” he said, having netted a scorcher from outside the area.“I don’t really think that much if I have a chance to shoot, so I just took the chance and shot it. Finally it hit the goal, so good.”Szoboszlai was one of five players retained from Thursday’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal, but even those brought in were established first-teamers including vice-captain Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones and Federico Chiesa.“We wanted to show that we take [the FA Cup] seriously,” Szoboszlai continued.“Whoever plays I think we always take it seriously, but we showed again today that we need the whole squad.“The new guys came in who maybe didn’t play as much as the others, but again they showed quality. We need everyone.”The linkup play between substitutes Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz ensured a difficult tie was not reflected on the scoresheet.Ekitike teed up Wirtz to make it 3-1 with six minutes of normal time to play, before the German fed his striker for a tap-in in the final minute – with more positive signs in a Liverpool side which is clearly still developing.“I think we need a little bit more time together to get to know each other better,” Szoboszlai said.“From the summer on I think we developed a lot, all the new guys settled in very well I think – but you need to ask them.“I’m happy for Flo, for Hugo as well and for all the guys. It was also for the fans. We move on.”
