The alert level was raised to "3 - Increased Tendency Towards Hazardous Eruption" (on a 0–5 level scale) on 6 January 2026 at 1320 by PHIVOLCS following a sustained period of unrest characterized by long-term ground deformation, confirmed summit lava extrusion, rapidly increasing rockfalls, and the formation of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), or pyroclastic flows, resulting from the collapse of newly extruded lava. Since 1 January 2026, a total of 346 rockfalls and 4 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded, compared to 599 rockfalls observed between November and December 2025. The rockfall events lasted between 1 and 5 minutes and involved lava material descending within 1 km of the upper S flank. There were 131 seismically detected rockfalls. The volume of incandescent rockfalls increased beginning 5 January, associated with accelerated dome growth and the onset of new lava extrusion from the summit lava dome. Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), or pyroclastic flows, descended the Bonga Gully (SE) starting at 1226 on 6 January from the collapse of newly extruded lava. The PDCs lasted at least 3 minutes, based on the seismic record, and deposited PDC deposits within 2 km of the summit crater. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions remained at background levels. Short-term ground deformation data from continuous GPS, electronic tilt, and EDM monitoring indicate ongoing inflation of the E and SE flanks since June 2024. As of 1600 on 6 January, a total of 2,889 individuals (comprising 729 families) were evacuated from communities within Mayon's 6-km permanent danger zone (PDZ), primarily in Tabaco City, Malilipot, Camalig, Ligao, Guinobatan, and Daraga. The highest numbers were from Tabaco City (1,181 people) and Malilipot (1,193 people).Source: Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) ... [read more] ...
