Joachim Trier’s newest film, Sentimental Value, is garnering quite a bit of attention. The film has received eight Golden Globe nominations, including for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay. The story follows two sisters, Nora and Agnes, as they reconnect with their estranged father, Gustav. He was once a famous director and he attempts to reconnect with Nora by offering her a role in his newest film. She says no and it is passed onto a young Hollywood up-and-comer, who doesn’t know what she has fallen into. Gustav’s script reflects his broken connection with his children even while he fails to improve his actual interpersonal relationships with them.In an interview with IndieWire, Trier shared his anxiety about the film and the complexity of the family dynamics.“I’m out on a limb with this one,” shared Trier. “I’ve done this the best I can, [to] go to very gentle, tender places of love and connection and disconnection, to try to get in the intimacy of these relationships for real, and I’ve been really anxious throughout the whole process, asking, ‘Is it too much?’”He continued, “This [multi-character narrative] more than anything I’ve done, I’m trying to create this one emotional arc in the story. It’s a super complicated balancing act, and thematically, we realized that we had a film when we had the ending.”With all the buzz, film fans are going to want to see Sentimental Value now that awards season has kicked off.
