H Vinoth’s action drama Jana Nayagan, which was Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited swansong before his political plunge, couldn’t make it to theatres due to troubles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and a subsequent case in Madras High Court.Parasakthi box office collectionOn Sunday (day 2), Parasakthi earned Rs 10.15 crore, a slight dip from its opening day collection of Rs 12.50 crore on Saturday at the domestic box office collection. While the dip on Sunday isn’t a great sign, one would imagine these figures to be far lower, given the competition from Jana Nayagan had it released on schedule.Parasakthi is Sivakarthikeyan’s lowest opening in two yearsAs per Sacnilk, the current box office collection of Parasakthi after two days at the domestic box office stands at Rs 22.65 crore. This is lower than that of Sivakarthikeyan’s last release, AR Murugadoss’ psychological action thriller Madhraasi, last year. Although that film marginally benefitted from also releasing in dubbed Hindi and Tamil versions, it eventually turned out to be a commercial failure.The two-day domestic box office collection collection of Parasakthi is less than half of what Sivakarthikeyan’s film amassed with Rajkumar Periasamy’s 2024 period war drama Amaran, which earned Rs 46.65 crore. Kongara’s film is Sivakarthikeyan’s lowest opening in two years, after R Ravikumar’s 2024 sci-fi action comedy Ayalaan, which earned only Rs 9.6 crore in its first two days at the domestic box office.Parasakthi’s box office competitionParasakthi may not have directly competed with Jana Nayagan, but the latter’s last-minute delay announcement seems to have affected its momentum as well. Despite his best efforts to avert a clash with Vijay’s last film, Sivakarthikeyan had to release his new film around the same time, thanks to the lucrative occasion of Pongal.However, he’d unconventionally chosen to release Parasakthi on a Saturday, a day after Jana Nayagan was scheduled to release on Friday. That was a strategic move so that the distributors could position both the Tamil releases optimally. With the postponement in the release of Vijay’s film, that costed Sivakarthikeyan another day at the box office.However, it couldn’t have released on Friday in place of Jana Nayagan because Parasakthi had a run-in with the CBFC of its own.
