Norwich manager Philippe Clement has revealed that Josh Sargent refused to play against Walsall in the FA Cup on Sunday.Speaking after their 5-1 win in the third round, the Belgian revealed that the American had sent him a text the night before the game to say he wasn’t available.Sargent asked to play no part in the contest at Carrow RoadGettyThe USA international isn’t injured, and it could have something to do with a bid that has just been lodged by Toronto.Fabrizio Romano reports that the MLS side have submitted an offer of $18million to the Canaries for Sargent. This works out as just under £13.5m, which would be a profit on the £8m they spent in the summer of 2021 to sign him from German club Werder Bremen. But despite this, the club have no intention of letting him go in this window. The 25-year-old has 56 goals for Norwich in 157 appearances, seven of those goals coming this season. He started with five in four but has only scored twice in the Championship since.Still, with Norwich embroiled in a relegation scrap to avoid playing in League One next year, they could do with Sargent in their battle to avoid the drop.As a full American international, the forward has the experience and quality to make the difference for Clement’s side. But it’s looking as if his future is away from Norfolk and is back in North America.Clement lays down the lawSpeaking at his post-match press conference, the Belgian said: “Josh sent me a message [on Saturday] evening saying he would not be available because of transfer things in his head.Sargent has taken drastic action in a bid to force a move, which is unlikely to go down well with the club’s fansGetty“This is obviously not something we want, and it will have consequences.“It is something we need to speak about inside the club, but the club has made it really clear to Josh and his agent that he will not be leaving during this transfer window.”What happens next?Clement confirmed in a separate interview with the BBC that Sargent wasn’t injured. The Belgian said of Sargent: “He was not injured. We will talk about this later on in the week, in the club, what to do with that.”His contract doesn’t expire until 2028, but now that he’s taken this stance, the club will have to make a decision over his future.Clement insists that the club will not sanction the sale of Sargeant during this transfer windowGettyNorwich didn’t miss him too much on Sunday, however as Jovon Makama scored a hat-trick, making him their leading goalscorer this season with 12.And after the match, Clement praised the young forward. He said: “Jovon is improving a lot. “The staff is working a lot with him, like with the other players, with all the details of how to become better.“He’s already scored more goals [this season] than he scored last season in the lower league [with Lincoln] and that’s positive.“He needs to keep this hunger and desire to become better in every detail of his game because he’s still a young player who can learn a lot, but he’s showing good potential and I’m happy about that.”Norwich’s victory was overshadowed by the passing of a supporter towards the conclusion of the match following a medical emergency.
