If you’re waiting for another season of Severance, the best advice we have for now is a reference to the poster of Dylan in the Lumon break room: Hang in there! After becoming Apple TV+’s most-watched series (surpassing even Ted Lasso), the sci-fi show created by Dan Erickson seems like the kind of project the streamer would be very eager to get back on screens ASAP. Here’s what we know about the next chapter of Severance so far.Has Severance been renewed for a third season?Yes, praise Kier! Apple announced the renewal on March 21, 2025, the same day the season 2 finale debuted. CEO Tim Cook even shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) with a Severance montage.View full post on X“Making Severance has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” Ben Stiller, director and executive producer, said in a statement at the time. “While I have no memory of this, I’m told making season 3 will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”Star and executive producer Adam Scott also said, “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast & crew, Apple and the whole Severance team. Oh hey also—not a huge deal—but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”The writers room was already underway back in , Stiller told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published February 5. “Everything changed a lot after the strike, for everyone, in terms of the way people are looking at budgets and spending,” Stiller told THR. “To Apple’s credit, they stayed on track with what the show was, and they’ve supported it.”He previously hinted at the show’s future, telling Collider in November 2024 that the series could go on if it continues to be a success.“You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it,” he said. “That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to, and Apple’s been really supportive of that and been sensitive to what the story is and not saying, ‘Okay, this is something that has to keep going as long as it’s successful.’ It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our season 3 work.”Related StoriesWhat is Cold Harbor in ‘Severance’?Breaking Down the ‘Severance’ Eagan Family TreeWhat Happened to Gemma on SeveranceWhen will Severance season 3 come out?The release date and production plans are not public yet. However, Stiller toldThe Hollywood Reporter in February 2025 that he hopes the wait for season 3 isn’t as long as the three-year gap before seasons 1 and 2, the latter of which was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023. He reiterated to the New Heights podcast that the new season will “definitely not” take that long.Who will be in the cast?Apple has yet to confirm the full season 3 ensemble. The season 2 cast included: Adam Scott (Mark), Britt Lower (Helly/Helena), John Turturro (Irving), Zach Cherry (Dylan), Tramell Tillman (Mr. Milchick), Patricia Arquette (Ms. Cobel), Dichen Lachman (Gemma), Christopher Walken (Burt), Jen Tullock (Devon), and Michael Chernus (Ricken).New additions to season 2 included Sarah Bock (Ms. Huang) and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Mr. Drummond). Given the events in the finale, the latter almost certainly won’t be returning next season. It’s still unclear if Ms. Huang will reappear.Jon PackWhat will Severance season 3 be about?Warning: more spoilers below. After that mind-blowing season 2 finale, there are a few places the series could go next. While we wait for more details from the Severance team, here are some issues season 3 might address.First, Mark’s Innie and Outie are now at odds. In the finale, Outie Mark tries to convince his Innie to get his wife, Gemma, out of Lumon’s testing floor, though their escape would theoretically lead to the end of Innie Mark—or, at least, his “reintegration” with Outie Mark. Innie Mark doesn’t want that; he desires to continue living his own life, one with Helly in it. In the end, he does help to free Gemma, but he doesn’t leave Lumon with her, instead choosing to stay on the severed floor with Helly. How long can he stay there, defying his Outie, in season 3? And will Gemma, knowing that Innie Mark chose not to leave with her, spend the next season trying to get her husband out of Lumon?Although Helly appears to have secured a temporary happy ending with Innie Mark, an earlier encounter with Jame Eagan might foreshadow some trouble. In the season 2 finale, the Lumon CEO found Helly at her desk and told her he’s lost faith in his daughter—her Outie, Helena—as the future of the company. But he does see the fire of Kier in Helly. Although the interaction between Jame and Helly doesn’t last long, it seems to portend an eerie turn in Helly’s future. Will Jame choose her as his new successor? And might she be tempted to team up with him? Also in the season 2 finale, Dylan returns to Lumon because his Outie vetoes his resignation. He tries to trap Mr. Milchick in the bathroom while Helly and Mark run off, and he teams up with the Lumon Innie marching band to stand up to their boss. What will be the fallout of that confrontation? Even Milchick has begun to defy Lumon’s authority in his own ways in season 2. Will he fully reject his bosses in season 3?Will Harmony Cobel continue her quest for vengeance against Lumon, earning her due credit for inventing the severance procedure? Will she and Devon continue to work together—maybe even with Gemma—to get Mark out of Lumon? And by the way, where did Irving go? Will he ever come back?Jon Pack//AppleWill Ben Stiller direct Severance season 3?Sadly, no. In a new interview with the L.A. Times published in August 2025, Stiller revealed that he won’t be directing any episodes of Severance season 3 because he’ll be busy shooting a World War II movie in the spring.“I’m at the point in my life where I’m like, ‘The clock is ticking,’” he said about making time for everything he wants to work on. “Sixty sounds old. It’s hard to get around it.”Jessica Lee Gagné, the show’s Emmy-nominated director and cinematographer (who helmed the season 2 episode ”Chikhai Bardo“), also won’t return for season 3. “I’m working on a lot of stuff,” she told Deadline. “It’s a big shift for me, moving into directing and DPing. I’m really trying to give myself a shot at the directing thing, which means I have to stop the DOP train and focus on finding the projects that I want to do, and that takes a lot of time. And then you have to push those projects.”When will Severance season 3 start filming? At the Emmys on Sept. 14, 2025, Scott told USA Today that the Severance crew are hoping to begin filming season 3 “sooner rather than later,” pointing to a potential spring 2026 start to production. When asked what it would be like without Stiller on set, he assured that “Ben’s still gonna be very involved [in the series].”Also at the ceremony, Erickson shared that the team already knows how the series wraps. “We know the end, and we don’t really know how we’re getting there,” he told IndieWire. “We have some idea of how we’re getting there, but we definitely like to be open to playing jazz a little bit and changing things as we go along, falling in love with characters that we didn’t necessarily expect to fall in love with, and incorporating them into the story in new ways. I think it is possible to over-plan, but we know where we’re going at the end of the day.”This story will be updated.
