Probably not what that person is going for, but when I was a kid on the east coast, "chiggers" were a type of bug that would burrow into your skin and itch like hell. The drugstore sold sealant that you'd put onto the entry wounds to suffocate the bugs, but my mom always had us use clear nail polish because it did the same thing for cheaper.
