I’m in this situation and it’s weird. My dad lived five states away and abandoned his home to live with my aunt and eventually a nursing home. Like, left the fridge and freezers full, even after the power was cut. The house was left with everything in it in 2019. Rodents got in along the way, pipe burst and mold set in. It’s disgusting. I took a week-long trip last year to clean it out and after three 25 yd dumpsters, only got half the house empty. There is still half the house, a barn that’s collapsing, a couple of sheds, and multiple vehicles to dispose of. We begged my dad to sell the place when he was alive and he argued, “I want to leave something for the kids!” So, he left us a pile of garbage that was nearly taken by the state because he stopped paying taxes in the nursing home. We will probably recoup some money, but it’s thousands trying to sort the mess out before it can be sold. I always figured that if we inherited anything, it would be much more cut and dry.
