The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Friday, March 6th, 2026, at 2:22 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.A second report was later issued by The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.3, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.1.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Mirto (pop. 8,700) located 13 km from the epicenter, Rossano Stazione (pop. 23,800) 21 km away, Cariati (pop. 8,300) 25 km away, and Corigliano Scalo (pop. 15,100) 29 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Giovanni in Fiore (pop. 17,400) located 52 km from the epicenter, Castrovillari (pop. 20,300) 55 km away, Quattromiglia (pop. 22,900) 65 km away, Cosenza (pop. 63,900) 67 km away, and Crotone (pop. 64,600) 74 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1287–287 km (179–179 mi)287 km (179 mi)III: Weak shaking439–108 km (24–67 mi)65 km (41 mi)IV: Light shaking335–85 km (22–53 mi)53 km (33 mi)V: Moderate shaking141–41 km (25–25 mi)41 km (25 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (11 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 3 km2 (1 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 3 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Mar 6, 2026 01:22 pm (Universal Time)19 minutes ago - felt4.410 km0 km - This quakeIonian Sea, 39 km NE of Rossano Stazione, Provincia di Cosenza, Calabria, ItalyMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksPrevious quakes in the same area of this earthquakeStrongest in 1 year 31 weeksThe earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Italy in over 1 year 31 weeks.
