The deadliest single incident was the bombing of a girls’ elementary school in Minab, where roughly 180 young children were killed while in class. The U.S. government is still conducting its own investigation, but evidence assembled by The New York Times points towards a U.S. strike. Apparently, none of that was enough. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, a man who treats the Geneva Convention the way he treats sobriety, has been unusually candid about the administration’s posture. At a Pentagon press conference on Wednesday, he told reporters that U.S. forces were delivering “death and destruction from the sky all day long” and that pilots had been granted “maximum authorities” by Trump personally. “This was never meant to be a fair fight,” Hegseth said. “We are punching them while they are down, which is exactly how it should be.” When asked about the school strike that killed scores of children, he simply said that they’re investigating it. Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian recently issued a public statement saying that Iran will stop attacking neighboring countries unprovoked. While that is a significant concession, Trump framed this as total capitulation, declaring this as “the first time Iran has ever lost, in thousands of years, to surrounding Middle Eastern countries,” proving that he’s never even leafed through a history book. Over 1,300 civilians dead wasn’t a red line. It was a warmup. And now the president is on social media promising that the worst is still to come.
