Students at Jain University on Thursday staged a protest after boycotting classes, demanding strict action against the Head of Department (HOD) who has been booked by the Tilak Nagar police for allegedly sexually assaulting a BCA student. The accused, identified as Sanjeev Kumar Mondal, had allegedly invited the student to his residence under the pretext of having lunch with his family. Students raised slogans and attempted to protest within the Jayanagar campus premises, prompting the administration to seek police assistance. Classes were subsequently called off, and students were asked to disperse. The protest comes days after the FIR was registered against Sanjeev Kumar Mondal based on a complaint by the student, who alleged that he had called her home, touched her inappropriately by promising to help her secure attendance and full marks.According to the complaint, the HOD had invited her for lunch with his family, but when she arrived, he was alone. The victim reportedly escaped the house on the pretext of an emergency and informed her parents, who later approached the college management and the police. However, the HOD was released on station bail on the same day, sources told The Hindu. Students on Thursday had planned to submit a memorandum to the management demanding the HOD’s immediate suspension. “The students decided to protest following the complaint from one of their peers. The HOD was suspended the same day the FIR was filed. The police were called only to prevent any untoward incident,” said a senior management representative. When asked about allegations that protesting students were locked in a conference room, the official refused to comment. Published - October 09, 2025 09:56 pm IST
