Nvidia has finally approved Samsung’s 12-layer third-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM3E) chips, according to a new report. This is likely Samsung’s most delightful news of the year. This approval is likely to bring a dramatic shift in the HBM landscape and could help the South Korean firm earn billions more in the coming months.Samsung's 12-layer HBM3E chips finally approved by Nvidia for its flagship AI acceleratorAccording to a report from News1 (via @jukanlosreve), Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently sent a letter of intention to buy 12-layer HBM3E chips to Samsung Electronics chairman Jay Y. Lee. This means that Nvidia has finally approved Samsung's best HBM3E memory chips to be used with its flagship GB300 AI accelerators. The two companies are now reportedly in the final stages in which they will decide on the quantities, pricing, and shipment schedules of the approved memory chips. Samsung's primary rivals, SK Hynix and Micron, have been supplying HBM3E chips to Nvidia for over a year. On the other hand, Samsung has been trying to get Nvidia's approval for its HBM3E chips for over a year and a half. Its chips reportedly had heat-related issues. While the company tweaked the design several times, it didn't pass Nvidia's quality tests. Then, the company had to completely redesign its chips inthe first half of this year to solve those issues. While Samsung will likely not be able to ship a large quantity of HBM3E chips due to the industry’s imminent shift to the next-generation (HBM4) memory chips, this approval is still a significant milestone for the South Korean firm. It marks Samsung’s entry into Nvidia’s supply chain, potentially leading to the supply of HBM4 chips next year.Jay Y. Lee was reportedly instrumental in securing Nvidia’s approval. Earlier this year, he sent a strong message to the company’s memory division. He also spent a significant part of August in the USA. During this time, he met with several high-profile business partners, including Nvidia CEO, and high-level Samsung executives to plan for the future. The post Samsung gets the its most delightful news of the year appeared first on SamMobile.
