(Photos: Banijay Asia, Amazon Prime Video)Twinkle Khanna and Kajol have teamed up for the women-led chat show Two Much With Twinkle and Kajol. The series began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 25, and three episodes have been released so far. The premiere episode featured Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, followed by Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in the second. The third episode saw Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan grace the couch. The show’s creator and producer, Mrinalini Jain, recently spoke to SCREEN about the making of the show.Speaking about her involvement with the show from its inception, Mrinalini shared what it was like to break into a traditionally male-dominated format. She said, “I have been involved from the inception of the show. Right from when we thought about it to bringing Kajol and Twinkle on board, to even wanting to do a female-led chat show. I have been dabbling with this idea of a very female gaze-led chat show for a while.”“Apart from Ellen or Oprah or the Drew Barrymore show, even internationally in the last couple of decades, the late-night talk show space has been very much dominated by men. As a result of this, I feel, questions that women want to ask are sometimes ignored because there is a very big male gaze on all the shows,” Mrinalini added. On bringing Kajol and Twinkle togetherBoth Kajol and Twinkle Khanna are known for their unfiltered personalities, so bringing them together to co-host a show was quite an unexpected move. Speaking about this, Mrinalini said, “We really wanted to bring a talk show where we were asking questions women wanted to ask, and we thought who better than Kajol and Twinkle to champion this. We work with Kajol a lot on The Trial, and we absolutely love her. She is so unfiltered in everything she does. She is unbothered about what people say. If there is another person who can match her energy with her wit is Twinkle. She is somebody who is not afraid to be who she is or ask difficult questions; that’s how this idea came out.”Mrinalini added, “Nobody thought they would come together, and they have. Nobody thought they would have the ease they do.”Discussing how ensuring they remained politically correct was never really a challenge, Mrinalini went on to share, “I truly believe that it’s not the uncomfortable questions people skirt around, it’s the manner in which these questions are asked. We never set out to be a salacious show; we wanted it to appear like a chat between friends. If questions like ‘Is it okay for men to cry?’ or ‘What does it take for a woman to succeed in a man’s world?’ are asked with ingenuity and a little bit of earnestness, all the big celebs are okay to answer them. In today’s day and age, everyone knows they have a large impact on pop culture. If it’s okay for a celeb to cry, then it’s okay for a normal 40-year-old man also to cry. We received so many messages after people saw Aamir and Salman cry, it really helped normalize the moment. We are a very celebrity-driven market, and a lot of things acceptable to them would be acceptable to us.”On curating the guest list for Two Much With Kajol and TwinkleSharing how they managed to get such an illustrious guest list for the first season, Mrinalini Jain said that it was Kajol and Twinkle Khanna’s star power that came in handy. She said, “We leveraged on who Kajol and Twinkle had great relationships with. The show is a lot about stories, so we wanted them to be with people with whom they have shared stories or have been connected to their lives in certain ways. That was the main criterion, so that people could see friends chatting with, what the conversations would look like at a table.”Story continues below this adMrinalini also shared that much of Two Much With Kajol and Twinkle is “unscripted.” “We had a format in place. A large part of the show is actually unscripted and unfiltered. Niranjan Iyengar has written the show. Janvi Obhan is the creative director. They have researched a lot to make sure we ask questions that have not been answered in a lot of chat shows. We ask a few things that the public wants to know. We leveraged on personal anecdotes from Kajol and Twinkle because most of the guests who are on the show shared a personal equation with them and had a lot of stories to tell.”On the show’s comparisons with Koffee With KaranAddressing the inevitable comparisons between Koffee With Karan and Two Much With Kajol and Twinkle, Mrinalini Jain said, “When we set out to do this show, even in India, chat shows have been very dominated by men, whether it’s Kapil Sharma or Koffee with Karan. You only remember Simi Grewal. Other than that, this space was very unutilized, and while we understood that there will always be comparisons, I strongly believe there is always space for a good idea. If we keep thinking about how something similar has been done, we will not be able to make shows.”Two Much With Kajol and Twinkle is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.Nawaz Kochra is an enthusiastic entertainment journalistic for the last 9 years, he has been a known face and successfully worked with some big publications.
