The Authority for the Protection of Embryos has confirmed that it has not received any application from Erin Tanti or his partner to undergo in vitro fertilisation (IVF).This confirmation was given during court proceedings before Magistrate Leonard Caruana involving Tanti, his partner Marisa Gallo and Dr Josie Muscat according to TVM. The three are accused of attempting to pursue IVF treatment without the necessary authorisation for Gallo to become pregnant while Tanti remains in prison. Tanti is currently serving a 20-year sentence after being found guilty in 2014 of killing 15-year-old Lisa Maria Zahra in Dingli.During the hearing, Simone Attard, Executive Head of the Authority for the Protection of Embryos, explained that for IVF treatment to be approved, there must be evidence of infertility, and couples are expected to try to conceive naturally for at least 12 months before seeking medical assistance. She stated that Gallo is not registered as a person seeking IVF treatment and that no permission has been granted for any procedure to enable her pregnancy, even though she had inquired about it. Attard added that Gallo was informed she was not eligible for IVF because there was no medical justification for the treatment. While Attard was testifying, Dr Muscat requested permission or possibly sought to perform 650 IVF procedures and 26 intrauterine insemination (IUI) interventions. The case is being prosecuted by Inspectors Lydon Zammit and Stephen Gulia. Dr Muscat is being represented by lawyers Jason Azzopardi, Joseph Bugeja, and Nicolai Bugeja, while Tanti and Gallo are being defended by Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri.•
