Mental health as vital as physical well-being, says GIMS professor

Health does not merely mean being physically fit, mental well-being is equally important, said Rakesh Policepatil, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS).He was speaking after inaugurating a programme organised to mark World Mental Health Day by the Department of Psychology of Smt. Veeramma Gangasiri Women’s Degree College, run by the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society (HKES), in Kalaburagi on Friday.Dr. Patil noted that, in today’s world, people pay greater attention to physical fitness while neglecting the significance of mental health. “True health is not limited to bodily strength alone, it also includes peace of mind, emotional balance, and the ability to maintain harmony with society,” he said.Highlighting the challenges of modern life, he said technological advancement, competition, work-related stress, and increasing life demands have taken a toll on people’s minds.“Even when the body is active and strong, the mind often remains filled with anxiety, fear, and pressure. This imbalance leads to depression, loss of confidence, anger, frustration, and loneliness, the issues that affect not only individuals but also their families and society. Hence, taking care of mental health is essential for leading a healthy and fulfilling life,” he added.Guest speaker Dilip Kumar S. Navale, Psychologist at the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, Kalaburagi, spoke about the role of mental health and social psychology in building a healthy society.Head of the Department of Psychology, Chhaya Patil, said that World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10 every year, aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and promote empathy toward people living with mental illnesses. “The theme for World Mental Health Day 2025 is ‘Ensuring Mental Health Services in Times of Crisis and Emergencies’,” she said.College Principal Rajendra Konda presided over the programme.
