‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Backtracks, Won’t Be Totally Faithful to the Books

Warner Bros. has confirmed the obvious when it comes to its upcoming Harry Potter reboot. As filming continues on the HBO adaptation of JK Rowling’s novels, we’re gradually seeing more glimpses of what to expect from the new TV show. Over the past few months, we’ve seen images of Dominic McLaughlin’s Harry Potter in his Gryffindor Hogwarts uniform, as well as behind-the-scenes looks at iconic scenes such as the Dursleys’ disastrous visit to London Zoo, Hagrid taking Harry to London, and Vernon Dursley encountering an excitable wizard the day after Lord Voldemort’s defeat.Credit: HBOHowever, we’ve also seen slightly more surprising scenes.Earlier this week, images from the Harry Potter set in Cornwall revealed our first glimpse at John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow is shown with Dumbledore’s iconic long beard and full wizard robes, strolling down the beach.FIRST LOOK at John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore in the HARRY POTTER TV seriesFIRST LOOK at John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore in the HARRY POTTER TV series pic.twitter.com/1HuxpNfq93— Wizarding World Direct (@WW_Direct) October 8, 2025Most notably, the images confirmed that two characters who don’t appear in the book will feature in the TV show: Nicolas Flamel and his wife, Perenelle Flamel.Video of Dumbledore talking to Nicolas Flamel and his wife in the HARRY POTTER TV series(via Terry Burton)Video of Dumbledore talking to Nicolas Flamel and his wife in the HARRY POTTER TV series (via Terry Burton) pic.twitter.com/szl5EreYlH— Wizarding World Direct (@WW_Direct) October 8, 2025Lambert Wilson has since been unveiled as the actor portraying Nicolas Flamel, while Marthe Keller will play Perenelle. As every Potterhead knows, Flamel plays an important role behind the scenes of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (or, if we’re being totally accurate here, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”). Flamel is the creator of the Stone in question, which can offer immortality.Dumbledore, a close friend of Flamel’s, is tasked with protecting the Stone and chooses to do so by hiding it within the depths of Hogwarts.Fans have theorized that at least one of the scenes being filmed will see (spoiler alert) Dumbledore talking to the Flamels about the decision to destroy the Stone after Voldemort’s failed attempt to steal it from Harry in the show’s climax.Probably Dumbledore saying goodbye to Perenelle and Nicolas Flamel after deciding to destroy the Philosopher’s StoneProbably Dumbledore saying goodbye to Perenelle and Nicolas Flamel after deciding to destroy the Philosopher’s Stone pic.twitter.com/aeXNtddEXr— Wizarding World Direct (@WW_Direct) October 9, 2025‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Won’t Just Be A Faithful Recreation – It’ll Be MoreThe confirmation that Flamel will appear in the series confirms something we suspected all along. While Warner Bros. previously vowed that, unlike the original movies, the series would be totally faithful to the books, this isn’t totally the case. Instead, it seems that the series will use the books as a starting point for a more fleshed-out recreation of Rowling’s world – and, honestly, that’s the best approach they could have taken.Plenty of fans — and skeptics — have questioned whether a Harry Potter reboot is necessary. After all, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 premiered just 14 years ago, and the franchise remains one of the most beloved in modern pop culture.Credit: Warner Bros.Still, the series could carve out new ground by leaning into the books’ perspective. Much of what readers experienced through Harry’s eyes was condensed or left vague on screen, leaving room to expand. The Nicolas Flamel storyline is one example of untapped material.Future seasons might even explore flashbacks long demanded by fans, including the Marauders’ school years and the First Wizarding War — eras that deepen the mythology and give audiences more of the Wizarding World they’ve always wanted to see. (By that, we mean: We could finally see a young Sirius Black onscreen.)Are you excited for the Harry Potter reboot? The post ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Backtracks, Won’t Be Totally Faithful to the Books appeared first on Inside the Magic.
