Gervonta Davis’ head trainer, Calvin Ford, has expressed concerns over the rules for his student’s crossover clash with Jake Paul.Davis and Paul will meet on November 14 at Miami’s Kaseya Center in an exhibition bout over 10, 3-minute rounds. Due to the considerable size disparity between the two combatants, organisers weren’t able to get the fight sanctioned as a professional contest.Paul is a natural cruiserweight (200lbs), who tipped the scales at 227lbs for a heavyweight bout with Mike Tyson last November.Davis, on the other hand, operates at lightweight (135lbs) where he holds the WBA’s version of the world title. To plug the gap, a 195lbs catchweight limit was agreed upon. And while Ford would have preferred the limit to be 190lbs, he is far more aggrieved with the 12oz gloves Paul and Davis will be duking it out in.“I said the fight was doable because I watched Tank for years and watched other young men in gyms deal with big guys,” Ford told Fight Hub TV.“Yes, he’s big. To me it’s like Jake having his first open fights, if anyone knows about the amateurs…“My only concern is the gloves because we don’t fight in 12 oz gloves, we don’t use 12 oz gloves, that’s training gloves.“So my thing is, ‘Put Tank in eights, put (Jake) in tens.’ “That makes the fight more interesting, and we’ll go from there. Here’s how Davis and Paul measure uptalkSPORT“And I brought that up to one of his handlers, and they say, ‘No, we don’t want to do no mix and match.’ “It’s supposed to be an exhibition…He can wear the tens and we wear the eights, then we got a fight.”What weight of gloves do professional boxers usually fight in?12oz gloves are traditionally donned by amateurs, while professionals wear 8oz to 10oz, depending on their weight class.Anyone who boxes from flyweight to welterweight, like Davis, fights in 8ozs.Meanwhile, 10oz gloves are worn in contests above super welterweight (i.e. Paul). Why is Gervonta Davis fighting Jake Paul?Davis had been ordered by the WBA to defend his title against former foe Lamont Roach after the pair contested a controversial draw in March.Davis and Roach were inseparable on the night but now the former will face Paul in an exhibition matchGETTYWhen asked why his fighter decided to take on Paul instead, trainer Ford explained: “Tank, everybody he fights, he makes famous.“Roach was a nobody before he fought him. He was a world champion.“I understand that’s the biggest payday of his [Roach] life, but it’s more out there. Look at Pitbull [Isaac Cruz] he’s running with it.“If I said, ‘Forget about it, Tank, because it’s about taking care of your family.’ It’s based on what the fighters want to do.”
