Special pulse polio vaccination drive in six districts on October 12

The Telangana Health department will conduct a special Pulse Polio vaccination drive across six districts on October 12 (Sunday) as part of a nationwide campaign to prevent the re-emergence of the disease.The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has identified 290 districts across India for the drive, focussing on areas with significant movement of people from countries where polio cases continue to be reported. They include Bangladesh and Pakistan, which have recorded new cases over the past three years, said a release from the Health department.The selected districts in Telangana for the drive are Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, Hanamkonda and Warangal. The Health department estimates that around 17.56 lakh children below the age of five reside in these districts and all eligible children will receive the oral polio vaccine as part of the campaign. The department has urged parents to ensure that every child, from newborns to five-year-old, is administered the vaccine.India reported its last case of polio in 2011, while the last case in Telangana (United Andhra Pradesh) was recorded in 2007.Published - October 08, 2025 07:01 pm IST
