Gareth was a teammate of mine at Villa.“So of course, having seen him miss that, I thought I just want to go down (and comfort him).”He continued: “Do you know what, it’s funny. I was even thinking about what you want to say to him.“You can’t just tap people on the back and go, ‘don’t worry about it’. You know he’s going to worry about it.“So when I saw him in the other players lounge area, I said, ‘Listen, there’s bigger and better than you (that) have missed penalties, mate.’ That’s it. That’s the way it is.Southgate was consoled by his team-mates on the pitch before Townsend had the chance to speak to himTimes Newspapers Ltd“As I’m saying this to him, I’ve seen this anorak figure walking towards me with a sort of swagger from over Gareth’s shoulder. Might not be a great idea to do it now.’“And he says, bold as brass, ‘hey, Southgate, at least you had the b******* to take it.’“He said, ‘not like this [expletive]’ and pointed to a few of the others.
