After OpenAI, Anthropic to open its first India office in Bangalore

The move comes a few weeks after ChatGPT maker OpenAI officially established its presence in the country in New Delhi.In a statement, Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei said, “India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets.”Aimed at creating AI solutions tailored to the Indian market, Anthropic said it chose Bengaluru because of its talent pool and proximity to the country’s enterprise landscape. This will be its second office in the Indo-Pacific region, following Tokyo, Japan, with further expansions anticipated later this year.Amodei will be visiting India this week to express the company’s commitment to responsible AI systems that foster social benefit and economic growth, aligning with India’s AI ambitions. Anthropic recognises the potential of India’s innovation ecosystem, highlighting the collaboration between startups, developers, and established enterprises that can influence millions globally.In India, users can access Anthropic’s Claude models via the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud Vertex AI, enabling companies to utilise these models securely within their chosen environments. Furthermore, Claude Code, a command-line tool for developers, is available to enhance development workflows with natural language commands.Anthropic serves over 300,000 businesses worldwide, and nearly 80 per cent of consumer usage of its Claude models originates from outside the U.S. Emergent, an AI coding platform based out of India, is already integrating Claude’s capabilities into their operations, exemplifying a successful application of AI in the country.Story continues below this adLike OpenAI’s ChatGPT, India is the second-largest market for Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot, with a large number of people using it for tasks like mobile UI development and web app debugging.
