The restoration of the Santa Marija tal-Ħlas Chapel in Żejtun has been successfully completed. This project was carried out under the restoration scheme open to Local Councils and supervised by the Department of Restoration and Preservation, with the department’s own workers and resources. The Minister for Culture, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, said that this restoration project is a clear example of how investment in our historical heritage serves not only to safeguard the past but also to foster a sense of identity and pride within local communities.“Chapels such as Santa Marija tal-Ħlas stand as tangible witnesses to the faith, craftsmanship and dedication of the Maltese people over the centuries. By taking care of them, we are ensuring that this heritage is passed on to future generations,” said Minister Bonnici. The works began in February 2025 following approval from the Planning Authority and were completed in September 2025. The intervention included the removal of cement render from the stone, cleaning and repairing of the façades, and repointing using compatible materials. The wooden apertures were also restored, involving the replacement of deteriorated sections and refinishing. In addition, the rainwater collection system was improved through the installation of traditional clay pipes, allowing rainwater to be channelled from the roof without causing damage to the façades. The Santa Marija tal-Ħlas Chapel, located at the centre of Misraħ Santa Marija in Żejtun, is of great historical and cultural significance. It once served as the main church of the medieval village of Ħal Bisbut, known as ir-Raħal ta’ Fuq (the Upper Village). In the seventeenth century, it was used for the burial of infants and became known as the Chapel of Our Lady of Deliverance (Madonna tal-Ħlas).The present chapel was built upon the foundations of the original chapel, which dated back to 1575, but had to be rebuilt due to extensive damage. The first stone was laid by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri on 25 November 1692, the same day the foundation stone of the new parish church of St Catherine was laid. Later, in 1850, it was restored by Rev. Giovanni Tabone and a year later, the sacred relics of the martyr St Amabile were placed beneath the main altar.Present for the inauguration were Żejtun Mayor Joan Agius, members of the Żejtun Local Council and Archpriest Canon Anton Galea-Scannura.Tag someone you know is interested•
