Written by VARINDER BHATIA & JAGPREET SINGH SANDHU Chandigarh | Updated: October 8, 2025 02:30 PM IST 4 min readY Puran Kumar has named a senior IPS officer and two retired IPS officers of Haryana, blaming them for his death.The arrest of a head constable Monday on charges of allegedly demanding a bribe from a liquor businessman in Rohtak at the “behest” of Y Puran Kumar could be linked to the death of the Haryana-cadre IPS officer at his home in Chandigarh a day later.While the Rohtak police have claimed Sushil Kumar was working for Puran Kumar, senior Chandigarh Police officers confirmed to The Indian Express that in the “suicide note” recovered from the spot, Puran Kumar has named a senior IPS officer and two retired IPS officers of Haryana, blaming them for his death.Narendra Bijarniya, Superintendent of Police, Rohtak, told The Indian Express, “Yesterday, we received a complaint and a video from a liquor businessman who alleged that Sushil Kumar was demanding a bribe of Rs. 2.5 lakh on a monthly basis from him. The businessman said Sushil was demanding the bribe in the name of Y Puran Kumar”.Bijarniya said Sushil worked with Y Puran Kumar. “But even after his transfer out of the Rohtak Range, Kumar kept Sushil with him without any official orders.”Also read | Found dead with gunshot wound, IPS officer Puran Kumar was known for speaking up against caste bias, administrative issues“We registered a FIR on the basis of the written complaint and the video, based on which we picked up Sushil Kumar and interrogated him. He confessed to us taking a bribe in the name of Y Puran Kumar. Sushil was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody. However, we had not yet summoned or issued any notice to Y Puran Kumar to join the investigation. Before we could do anything like that, we learnt about his demise,” Bijarniya added.Late Tuesday, Kanwardeep Kaur, Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh, issued a statement, saying the Police Station 11 received information about a “suicide” at around 1.30 pm from House Number 116, Sector 11. Kaur said the staff of PS 11 and senior officers reached the spot.“The deceased has been identified as Sh. Y Puran Kumar, IPS 2001 Batch, Haryana Cadre. The body of the deceased was found in a room in the basement of the house with a gunshot wound. The CFSL team was called to the scene of the incident. Videography and photography of the entire scene were done. Physical and electronic evidence were seized by the CFSL team. The weapon used was seized by the team. The wife of the deceased is expected to return from her official visit on 8th October, after which a post-mortem shall be conducted by a board of doctors. Further investigation is underway,” Kaur said in the statement.Meanwhile, a senior officer of Chandigarh Police confirmed to The Indian Express that a “suicide note has been recovered”. “Y Puran Kumar has mentioned his issues with the administration, and he has also named a few senior officers of Haryana Police.
