Police destroy major ganja camps along Upper Berbice River

Police ranks conducted a four-day narcotics eradication operation in the Upper Berbice River area, destroying farms with several acres of marijuana.A Police release noted that the operation was carried out from October 3 to 6.In the Ebini savannahs, ranks discovered a three-acre farm with cannabis plants ranging from three feet to six feet in height. There was also a makeshift camp on the land measuring 20 by 20 feet. The cannabis plants and the camp were set on fire.Thereafter, the Police drone was used, and another farm was discovered about four miles away from the first farm, which is about six acres of land already prepared for planting cannabis. Four beds of nursery of cannabis plants were seen with approximately 5,000 seedlings. A makeshift camp measuring about 30 by 20 feet was seen, and a search was carried out in the camp during which two hammocks, one 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun, one Stihl Chainsaw, one Samsung cellphone, a haversack with about four (4) pounds of suspected dry cannabis and a brown cardboard box containing about thirty (30) pounds of dry cannabis were found.Police took possession of the firearm, the cellular phone, and the chainsaw, which were lodged at Kawkawni Police Station. The cannabis camp, along with the other content, was set on fire. The street value of the cannabis is about $5,082,000. No arrest was made.The ranks, acting on additional information, went back to Ebini, to an abandoned church, where approximately 30 pounds of cannabis were found in the church.Some of the ganja destroyedThe ranks later went to Wiruni, to a two-storey house surrounded by trees.Upon arrival at the location by boat, the ranks searched the premises and found about 90 pounds of cannabis. This was photographed and destroyed by fire on site. A search was conducted in the upper flat of the house, which contained two rooms and a hall, during which the Police found a black side-bag under the bed and a .32 Pistol with one empty magazine. Two phones were found in the bag, and these, along with the gun, were lodged at the Kwakwani Police Station.During the four-day operation, the ranks conducted another search in Wiruni, where they discovered a 15 by 10 feet one-storey house, where three 20-gauge shotgun cartridges were found. One black tarpaulin was found open up on the ground next to the house, which had a quantity of cannabis plants about four feet in height. These were photographed and destroyed on site. No arrest was made. A 15HP Yamaha Outboard Engine was seized and taken to the Kwakwani Police Station to be lodged.The ranks also acted on further information received, which led them to three acres of land with suspected cannabis plants. Two beds of about 3,000 seedlings were seen, and the land was already prepared for planting. A makeshift camp measuring 15 by 20 feet facing east was seen along with an agricultural mower.The aforementioned discoveries were photographed and destroyed on site. A 50HP Outboard Engine and a wooden boat were seen close to the area, and it was seized to be taken to the Kwakwani Police Station.
