Water sprinklers, anti-smog guns: Delhi PWD to step up measures to curb pollution before onset of winters

These are expected to be deployed across the city roads after Diwali, which is set to be celebrated on October 20.“We already have some vehicles. The mechanical sweeping has been in place for several months. So, this year the government has also given directions to the departments concerned to be prepared to take necessary steps to tackle dust in the air,” said an official.Story continues below this adAs per the dust mitigation norms under GRAP-III, a set of emergency measures implemented in the Delhi-NCR when the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches the “severe” category, construction sites are required to have dust and wind-breaking walls around the periphery in place.For sites having an area above 20,000 sqm, it is mandatory to install anti-smog guns to control the dust. Apart from this, the contractors executing the construction are also directed to cover the vehicles carrying construction material and wheels should be washed.The government also plans to install mist sprayer in electric poles installed on both sides of the road.Earlier in June, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved a ‘Pollution Control and Emergency Measures’ project. Under this project, the government plans to hire 250 water sprinkler machines fitted with anti-smog guns, 70 mechanical road sweeping (MRS) machines fitted with 210 water sprinklers and water tankers and anti-smog guns.Story continues below this ad“Under this, the PWD will sprinkle water on the arterial roads thrice in the day to control dust in the air.
