One dead after chemical tanker collides with LPG truck on Jaipur-Ajmer highway

(Express Photo by Rohit Jain Paras)Over 40 LPG cylinders exploded one after another on the busy Jaipur-Ajmer Highway near Mokhampura on Tuesday around 10:30 pm after a chemical-laden tanker rammed into a parked truck carrying the cylinders triggering a massive blaze. The fire and explosions could be seen and heard from kilometres away.Officials said on Wednesday that the tanker driver, identified as Ramraj Meena (35), was charred alive while five others sustained injuries. Around five vehicles parked near the LPG truck were also engulfed in the flames. However, the chemical in the tanker did not catch fire which prevented any further blasts in the vicinity.Police teams and fire tenders rushed to the spot, while traffic movement on the highway was suspended for approximately six hours. The road was reopened at 4:30 am but the traffic movement was slow till noon.Mokhampura police station SI Jayprakash told The Indian Express, “Around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, a tanker truck carrying chemicals collided with another truck loaded with LPG cylinders. The LPG truck was parked on the road side while its driver was having food at a nearby dhaba. The driver’s cabin of the tanker caught fire due to the impact of the accident which left its driver dead.”According to reports, the tanker was on its was from Gujarat to Jaipur. (Express Photo by Rohit Jain Paras)Eyewitnesses claimed that a Regional Transport Office squad was stopping vehicles for checking on the highway and to avoid them, the tanker driver changed his lane suddenly and lost control, leading to the collision.Jaipur Collector Jitendra Soni told The Indian Express that he has written to NHAI urging for a probe into the accident. “The highway comes under the jurisdiction of NHAI. I have written to the officials to form a committee and investigate the cause of this accident. After the NHAI submits its report, things will be clear,” said Soni.Story continues below this adChief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said that the district administration has been ordered to ensure proper treatment of the injured. “The accident of a fire breaking out in a truck loaded with gas cylinders on the Jaipur–Ajmer National Highway in the Mozmabad police station area of Jaipur Rural is extremely tragic. Fire brigade and disaster management teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations at the incident site.
