Cheryl Hines sat down for an interview where she discussed how disappointed she was by the public attacks that came from her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s family during his foray into politics. Hines shared that she had never seen that side of her in-laws before. Hines has been in the news before for discussing her much-opined-about husband. But the last time, the focus was on whether RFK actually had an affair with a reporter from The New Yorker — an accusation that the Curb Your Enthusiasm star said they have since moved past. What Hines did feel comfortable sharing, however, were private conversations among the notoriously private Kennedys. She recalled that when RFK first announced his candidacy, his mother congratulated him and asked whether his siblings would be joining his campaign. Hines claims that when RFK revealed to his mother that the rest of the family opposed him, his mother was genuinely surprised. RFK’s tenure as the Health and Human Services Secretary has been marred by controversy at every turn — to the extent that the CDC even asked Congress to rein him in before he causes irreparable damage to the American healthcare system. Even before then, he was known for spreading conspiracy theories that weren’t backed by science, and it was for that reason that many people saw him as unfit for leadership — including his own family members. According to The Hill, some Kennedy family members wrote to the public stating, “Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment… We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country.” An undoubtedly crushing blow to his bid for the White House — considering his family name was the only thing he had going for him during that campaign. To this day, the Kennedys still criticize RFK and express their unwavering support for public health workers as they try to stand up against his disruption. Hines sees this as disappointing. She told CBS Mornings, “I always thought the Kennedy family, one of their virtues was that family came first, and I admired that. So when some of his family decided to—there’s no other way to say it—attack him publicly, it was disappointing.” The Curb Your Enthusiasm star shared that it’s not just her husband who has lost the respect of the people he once loved — she too can no longer talk to her former co-stars. She explained that some of them find it “too difficult emotionally” to stay in touch with her, considering RFK’s role in Trump’s increasingly concerning administration. She did, however, say she understood their decision. As for her Curb co-star Larry David, she said she imagines he probably doesn’t love her close association with Trump. Considering David recently wrote a satirical opinion piece taking aim at Bill Maher for attending a Trump dinner by comparing it to dining with Hitler — claiming David simply “can’t love” her recent pivot to MAGA is certainly an understatement. Hines is currently promoting her memoir titled Unscripted.
