A woman has sought the wisdom of the netizens on Reddit as it seems to be the place to go when you need some perspective on whether your relationship is healthy or not. In this case, the poster questions whether she should allow her boyfriend to take the money her 15-year-old son receives in survivor benefits. For context, the post was made to the AITA (Am I The A**hole) subreddit where Redditors go to find out if they’re the ones in the right or wrong. In this case, the woman explains that her boyfriend recently proposed to her and the couple were planning to combine their families (her son and his sons) and get a house together. Of course, with a new house comes financial strain. She explains that they would be looking at $2,500 a month for the new place. The boyfriend budgeted that she and him would pay $950 each. However, the poster’s son receives $1,100 a month in Social Security survivor benefits from his late father, the issue is that the boyfriend wants to put $600 of that money towards the bills and put the rest in savings. That is the son’s money The poster argues that the money rightfully belongs to her son with her current practice being to give half to him to spend now and save the other half for when he’s older. She argues that “he should have some control over his money,” as he is almost 17. However, her boyfriend argues that as they are a family, all the money should be pooled together for shared expenses. The boyfriend even went as far as to accuse the woman of being selfish for not wanting to take the money that rightfully belonged to her son to use for “pooled expenses,” but she argued the money “should not be used to reduce the adult’s portion of the bills.” Reddit gives a verdict The people of Reddit delivered their verdict and they were not kind to the boyfriend. “OP your fiance wants to steal from a teenager the money available to him because of his dead father,” summarized one person. “Sounds like dude is trying to cash in on your son’s benefits,” added another. In an update a few days later the original poster revealed that she had broken things off with the boyfriend and he didn’t take it all that well. The argument was quite heated but she also dropped the bombshell that he wasn’t even paying child support for his minor child. This combined with manipulative and abusive behavior cemented the decision to call things off and kick the guy to the curb as fast as possible. It sounds like this woman and her son really dodged a bullet there. Reddit might have it’s problems, but sometimes it can truly is a life-saver.
