The version of Disney’s Hollywood Studios that Disney fans have come to know and love is about to vanish into the mists of renovation. The park that existed at the start of the year no longer exists in that form, and the changes are only just getting started.Credit: Patrick McGarvey, FlickrWhen Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro spoke of “dirt moving” at D23 Expo 2024, he wasn’t being poetic; he was setting the stage. Across Walt Disney World, the parks are undergoing a massive overhaul. Magic Kingdom is deep into its largest expansion ever, with new lands like Piston Peak National Park (based on Pixar’s Cars franchise) displacing long-cherished elements like Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. Meanwhile, Animal Kingdom is shedding DinoLand U.S.A. for a bold new Tropical Americas concept that will open around 2027, bringing Encanto, Indiana Jones, and more to life.On July 22, Disney announced that Animation Courtyard, including Star Wars Launch Bay and Disney Jr. Play & Dance, would permanently close on September 25, 2025. Its place will be taken by an all-new experience called The Magic of Disney Animation. This new attraction won’t just be a showpiece—it will be fully immersive. It will be an experience styled after the Walt Disney Studios buildings in Burbank, complete with animation workshops, live portraits, short films, meet-and-greets, and a new indoor play zone for kids. The iconic Sorcerer’s Hat is also slated to return, transformed as a beacon for this new animation realm.Credit: DisneyIt’s not just one land closing; the movement is sweeping:Grand Avenue has already been shuttered, along with Muppet*Vision 3D and Mama Melrose’s, in preparation for Monstropolis, one of the largest re-themes Disney has attempted. The reimagining will also extend to Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster though no closure date has yet been confirmed. With so many core sections of the park either behind walls or in flux, by fall 2025, the “old” Hollywood Studios will effectively have disappeared.Credit: DisneyRock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Opening ConfirmedAs for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Disney World fans now know when the Muppets will be dropping into the thrill attraction.
