Roberta Metsola is eyeing a third term as President of the European Parliament, EU news website Euractiv has reported. The Maltese politician is currently in her second term as EP President, which is set to expire in 2027. Although no European Parliament President has ever served for three terms, Euractiv reported that Metsola is seeking to make history. As per a purported gentleman’s agreement between Metsola’s EPP and the European Socialists PES, the Socialists have the right to nominate the next EP President. However, according to the report, Metsola is seeking to take advantage of political weaknesses within the socialists and run for a third term. As a sweetener, the EPP could then allow António Costa, the socialist president of the European Council, to remain in office for a full five-year term.EPP head Manfred Weber is reportedly behind this plan out of concern that Metsola could target his job if she leaves the presidency.Earlier this year, Metsola was heavily touted as a possible PN leader following the sudden resignation of Bernard Grech. However, she decided not to contest role, stating that it would have been irresponsible of her to resign her presidency position.•
