Guyana is both ready and willing to facilitate an extradition request for Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar, once requested by the United States government, according to Attorney General Anil Nandlall SC.The Mohameds are facing charges of fraud and money laundering related to gold smuggling and have been indicted in a Florida court.Nandlall, during his ‘Issues in the News’ commentary on Tuesday night, said what should follow that indictment is an extradition request.  And once that request is made, it will be acted upon.“Once that request is made, a process which is outlined both in the Fugitive Offenders Act is triggered, and a series of legal steps have to be followed, all of which are outlined in the legislation,” Nandlall explained, noting that extraditions were done before. And in clear terms, the Attorney General said, “Guyana has made it very clear that it is ready, willing, and most able to diligently discharge its legal duties and obligations under the current extradition framework that exists with the USA in relation to this matter, and we remain committed to that course.”The extradition request has not yet been made, but Nandlall said it was only logical for the case to unfold this way since the duo was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in 2024 and were indicted earlier in October 2025.The Attorney General pushed back concerns that the charges the Mohameds are facing were political in nature, noting that Guyana cannot influence the US justice system in that manner. Additionally, the charges are for alleged wrongdoings from 2017 to 2024, which spanned two governments in the US (the Joe Biden and Trump administrations) and two in Guyana (the APNU+AFC and PPP/C administrations). The case was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Each charge can carry a potential maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment. The post Guyana ‘ready & willing’ to act on extradition request for Mohameds once request made – Nandlall  appeared first on News Room Guyana.
