In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.Favored at 5-2 in his unveiling for Brad Cox in a very deep maiden special weight at Keeneland Saturday, Commandment (c, 2, Into Mischief) stamped himself as one to watch with a “sneaky good” fourth-place finish.Immediately under a ride from his inside draw, the Wathnan Racing colorbearer dropped back to race in 11th through an opening quarter in :22.75. He began to get his legs underneath him on the far turn, and, after guided off the rail and into the clear by Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the stretch, finished with interest in :12.21 to report home 5 1/4 lengths behind new 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Local Knowledge (Yaupon).Commandment received an 82 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.“All positive thoughts from Brad (Cox) going in,” said Case Clay, Wathnan's Racing Manager, USA.“I went in there thinking that he would perform well and that we had a shot to win the race. Irad (Ortiz) got off and was quite encouraging about the horse. And he's straightforward, you can get a good read one way or the other from him.”The very sharp final time of 1:10.23 for six furlongs was :1.20 seconds faster than the split division won by new 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Heartily (Complexity) on the last race of the card.“We got in the wrong division first time out,” Clay said with a laugh. “I think he could move forward off that. Seven furlongs to a mile could be better for him next time.”Commandment's dam Sippican Harbor winning the 2018 GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga | Sarah AndrewBy six-time reigning champion general sire Into Mischief, the Lee Pokoik-bred Commandment brought $500,000 from Case Clay Thoroughbred Management on behalf of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani's operation as a KEESEP yearling.
