(Source: File)The Mumbai Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday nabbed a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) officer for allegedly demanding a bribe to not act against owners of a Bandra row house who had put up an illegal shed on it and used it to house paying guests. An official said that MHADA had sent a letter to the complainant stating that an illegal shed had been constructed at the row house which was in his wife’s name. It further claimed that the row house was being used commercially for a paying guest business and that action will be taken against the row house. In order not to take action, the public servant Ranjit Balasaheb Chavan, Executive Engineer, MHADA, Bandra Division, is alleged to have initially demanded a bribe of Rs. four lakh from the complainant. As the complainant showed his inability to pay the said bribe, the public servant agreed to accept a bribe of Rs two lakh in instalments after compromise. The complainant, however, did not want to pay a bribe, so he filed a complaint with the ACB office on Thursday.ACB verified the complaint and found that the public servant Chavan had indeed agreed to accept a first installment of Rs 40,000 out of the Rs two lakh agreed upon amount by the complainant.During the immediate trap operation, Chavan was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs. 40,000 from the complainant. An official said that a case was registered against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and was placed under arrest.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:MHADA
