(AP Photo/Altaf Qadri)Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was not included in an otherwise strong 16-member Mumbai squad for the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy opener against Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar next week. The assignment will be the first match under new captain Shardul Thakur after Ajinkya Rahane relinquished the role in August.Rahane, however, has been included in the squad for the match that starts on October 15. Shivam Dube, who had such a profitable time both with bat and ball in the 2025 Asia Cup, also finds a place in the side, as does Ayush Mhatre, who led the India Under-19 side in the recently concluded Australia tour.The former will feature in the first round of fixtures before leaving for Australia to play in the five-match T20I series, which starts on October 29. Sarfaraz Khan, who was not picked for the ongoing two-Test series against West Indies, is also included in the squad.The right-hander will look to start the season on a positive note to put himself in contention for a spot in the two-Test series against South Africa in November.He did not feature in the Duleep Trophy due to a quadriceps injury, which he suffered while playing in the Buchi Babu tournament. Shreyas Iyer was expectedly missing from the squad after he was granted a six-month break from red-ball cricket by the BCCI after he experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longest format of the game.The 30-year-old captained India ‘A’ in the first multi-day match against Australia ‘A’ before missing the second match.
