Family bites into Nathan’s Famous hot dog thinking it’s a ‘hard onion’, but then they spit out a razor blade

A family trip to New York City took a scary turn for an Arizona family after they found a razor blade inside a hot dog from Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island. The incident happened on Sunday, October 5th, around 7 p.m. at the well-known location on 1310 Surf Avenue, one of the city’s most famous food spots. The family, led by a woman named Abbey, stopped at the hot dog stand hoping to film a fun food review for social media with their kids. But instead, they found a dangerous object that could have caused serious injury. Luckily, no one got hurt. Abbey told AMNY about the scary moment, saying, “On Sunday, October 5th, around 7 p.m., at the location on 1310 Surf Ave, my husband bit into what he initially thought was a hard onion, but it turned out to be a blade inside his food. Once he spit it out, we saw the blade and notified the employees.” The family quickly told the restaurant workers what they found. Manager says it’s not their fault as city launches investigation When the family told employees about the blade, the response was not good. Abbey said the manager denied it was the restaurant’s fault. She said the manager told them that the hot dogs are not made at that location and said there was no way the blade came from their restaurant. The manager thought it might have come from the onions or the mustard dispenser, Abbey said. @ahhbee.24 All we wanted was to do a fun food review with the kids. The video went viral fast, getting over 200,000 views in just a few days. Abbey wrote over the clip, “I’m still in shock. We found a blade inside the hot dog, and they claimed it didn’t come from them.” Other viral TikTok food incidents have grabbed public attention before, but this case involves a real safety risk. The New York City Department of Health told several news outlets that it got a complaint about what happened and has started looking into it. The department will check how the blade got into the food and if the restaurant followed proper safety rules. Some people who left comments on the viral video thought the blade may have broken off from food prep equipment instead of being put there on purpose. Several people said similar blades are used in tomato and onion cutters at restaurants and can break off too easily. While food safety problems at restaurants happen from time to time, finding a sharp object in your meal is rare but very serious. The Nathan’s Famous location at Surf and Stillwell Avenues is home to the yearly Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, which has been going on since 1916.
