Schools must put specific details of student safety measures online, else GR won’t serve purpose: HC

By: Express News ServiceMumbai | October 10, 2025 11:49 PM IST 3 min readThe bench had last month directed the state School Education Department to make available such details submitted by the schools on its website for the public at large by October 9 (Archive)The Bombay High Court on Friday said that schools across Maharashtra are required to provide detailed information pertaining to their compliance directions issued in Government Resolution (GR) for safety of the students and have to upload the same every month on the portal, else the efforts will be “meaningless.”This came after the state government informed the HC that website/portal to upload such details was made functional and out of nearly 1.08 lakh schools in the state, over 88,000 have already uploaded the details. The court was told that all the schools are asked to upload the details by October 15 and on 15th of every month thereafter.The bench had last month directed the state School Education Department to make available such details submitted by the schools on its website for the public at large by October 9.A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Sandesh D Patil were hearing a suo motu plea initiated by it taking cognisance of news reports of the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old children by a cleaning staff member at a school in Thane district’s Badlapur.Additional Public Prosecutor Prajakta Shinde for the government also told the bench that the state Women and Child Welfare Department has issued a GR for residential schools to submit such details. The bench then referred to recent news reports of suicide by two minor boys at Palghar Ashram Shala and sought to know “what about the school where the incident happened.” APP Shinde said that a PIL is pending in the court related to student deaths in ashram shalas.Advocate Rebecca Gonsalves, appointed as amicus curiae to assist the bench in the matter said that the Supreme Court had issued detailed directives on student’s suicide.The bench examined whether the portal was functioning and observed that replies or information submitted by the schools were “brief” and they had to submit specific details.Story continues below this adJustice Mohite-Dere orally remarked the specific details have to be uploaded every month, else it will be “meaningless” and “serves no purpose”.
