Mumbai Metro Line 4: trial runs to begin shortly, passenger service by end of 2025

Metro Line 4, or the Green Line, is set to operate between Kasarvadavali and Wadala for 32.3 km with 32 stations. The line, once operational, is likely to provide relief to commuters in the eastern and central regions of Mumbai and Thane.According to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, preparations are in full swing on a 10.5-km section between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction with 10 stations. The work has been divided into phases, with this stretch opening first, followed by the rest of the line.About 60 per cent of the construction on this elevated corridor has been completed. A 6.9-km viaduct, which includes girders and precast segment placements, out of the total route length, has also been completed. Officials said even with heavy vehicular movement, structural activities like U-girder and I-girder installation have been completed between six stations: Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Tikujiniwadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden and Kasarvadavali.On Monday, MMRDA installed the last girder on this section. Laying of tracks has also been completed on the majority of sections of the 10.5-km stretch, an important milestone before the commencement of trial runs.The electrification process along this corridor is underway, with 4.6 km of the section already electrified, and the overhead wires are being tested. MMRDA has placed a six-coach metro train on the elevated track, utilising cranes, as preparation for the trial run. However, the car shed earmarked specifically for the trial purpose has yet to be built.Once the trials begin in September, safety checks, system integration, and signalling tests will be conducted by officials before final approval is given for passenger service.
