A federal judge ruled that Google can no longer enter into exclusive distribution deals worth billions of dollars with to make its search engine the default option on phones and other devices. The ruling, part of the government’s landmark antitrust case against Google-parent Alphabet, stopped short of ordering a breakup of Google, a move that would have represented one of the government’s most drastic efforts in decades to curb the power of a monopoly.“Google will not be required to divest Chrome; nor will the court include a contingent divestiture of the Android operating system in the final judgment. Plaintiffs overreached in seeking forced divesture of these key assets, which Google did not use to effect any illegal restraints,” wrote Judge Amit Mehta in a 250-page ruling on Tuesday. This story was originally featured on Fortune.com
