Philadelphia Eagles v Dallas Cowboys odds, predictions and betting tips – Philly expected to start Lombardi defence with a win

Wait 5 sec.

The Dallas Cowboys begin life without defensive star Micah Parsons with a trip to the world champion Philadelphia Eagles, in an all-NFC East battle to kickstart the new NFL season. The blockbuster trade, which sees the four-time Pro Bowler head to Green Bay, will have only added to the hype for Philly fans, who will already be in celebratory mood following their second Super Bowl success in February. Here, they will be aiming for a fourth win in a row over their divisional rivals at Lincoln Financial Field.Eagles vs Cowboys best betsSaquon Barkley over 112.5 rushing and receiving yards – 22/25 with BetMGMDak Prescott to attempt over 40 passes – 19/10 with bet365Philadelphia defence to score a touchdown – 5/1 with Paddy PowerOnly four of the last 25 visiting teams have managed to crash the Lombardi Trophy winners’ week 1 party, although two of those came recently – when the Detroit Lions went into Arrowhead and beat the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, and the Buffalo Bills upset the Los Angeles Rams the year before. On paper, it does seem a tall order for a Cowboys team which went 7-10 last season, and who have now been stripped of their one, true, game-changing player. Philadelphia won twice as many games in the regular season on their way to winning it all, and have only lost five home games in the last three years. They are still stacked with offensive and defensive talent, and will be tipped to once again have a league-leading running game with Saquon Barkley, although he will be hoping to overcome the infamous Madden cover curse!Find more great offers at our best rated NFL betting sites.Eagles vs Cowboys previewAfter dealing Parsons to the Packers, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke of how his team needed to stop the run. As far as matchups against rushing attacks go, there couldn’t be a tougher assignment than facing the Eagles in week 1 with Saquon Barkley fresh off a 2000+ yard season. In the trade package which included two first-round picks, Dallas did also acquire defensive lineman Kenny Clark in a bid to contain Barkley, and other dangerous backs on the schedule this season. The Cowboys gave up the fourth most yards on the ground last season, and the most rushing touchdowns at 25. They were also swept by the Eagles last season, losing both games heavily – 34-6 and 41-7 respectively. Both of these scorelines do come with an asterisk, however, as starting quarterback Dak Prescott didn’t play in either, having suffered a season-ending hamstring tear in early November. In fact, when Dak has faced the birds, he has beaten them nine times in 13 attempts. The nine-year veteran signal caller will be healthy here, and will have another target to throw to in the form of George Pickens, who arrived in a summer trade with Pittsburgh. The Dallas offence, with Dak at the helm, has never struggled to score points. The hosts have lost a number of defensive starters this offseason too, with Josh Sweat, Milton Williams and Darius Slay all heading to new teams. Such has been Howie Roseman’s drafting in recent years, however, they still have incredible depth across the board. The trio of Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith – who all played for Georgia in college – are set to form one of the scariest front threes in the league. Not the sight Prescott would want to see after nearly a year on the sidelines.Meanwhile, last year’s rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean will play an increased role in a revamped secondary and Jihaad Campbell from this year’s draft will slot in at linebacker.Eagles vs Cowboys betting tipsFind the latest odds for Philadelphia Eagles vs Dallas Cowboys courtesy of BetMGM. BetMGM have as Eagles at 1/5 on the moneyline and a comfortable 8.5 point favourite on the spread. With that in mind, here are some ways in which we believe you can extract more value from what seems like a home banker.Saquon Barkley to record over 112.5 all-purpose yardsSaquon Barkley broke all sorts of records in his debut campaign with the Eagles last time out, eventually totalling 2,504 rushing yards from 16 regular season, and four postseason, games. He reached 100 rushing yards in 14 of those 20 games and, besides two 200+ yard outings against the Rams, his next biggest statline came against the Cowboys in week 17 – where he ran for 167.The aforementioned Kenny Clark may help in slowing him down somewhat, but there is no doubt the dynamic running back will remain the Eagles’ main weapon. If the Eagles get ahead early, that will only lead to increased touches for Barkley – whether they be carries or catches out of the backfield. Choosing this market accounts for the scenario where the Cowboys are able to hold Barkley to a respectable yards-per-attempt, and if new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo decides to sprinkle in more passing plays. Back Saquon Barkley to rush and receive for a total of 112.5 or more yards at 22/25 with BetMGM Dak Prescott to throw over 40 timesUp until his injury, Dak Prescott was throwing the football – on average – close to 36 times a game last season. Even after his injury in week 9, the Cowboys continued to air it out with Cooper Rush throwing over 30 times in all bar three of his starts and Trey Lance registering 34 attempts in his one and only outing in week 18.The running game, in contrast to the Eagles, has played second fiddle in Dallas since Ezekiel Elliott was in his prime years. Last season they recorded the sixth-fewest yards on the ground, and they were also one of only six teams to average four or fewer yards-per-carry.  It is likely Dallas will favour a pass-heavy approach once again this season. If they fall behind on the scoreboard here, they may have no choice but to put it all on Dak. Bet on Dak Prescott to register over 40 passing attempts at 19/10 with bet365 Philadelphia defence to score a touchdownThey say defence wins championships and this was certainly true for the Eagles in 2024, and in how they dominated the Chiefs’ offensive line in the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes was put under constant duress and ended up throwing two interceptions – one going for a pick six – and fumbling once. The Eagles forced a joint-most 22 fumbles in the regular season too.The Cowboys’ offensive line is also under re-construction following the retirements of long-time stalwarts Tyron Smith, Zack Martin and Travis Frederick. Tyler Guyton was asked to play left tackle in his rookie season, having played on the right side at college, and he struggled massively – especially in pass protection. Cooper Beebe did rather better at centre, but they will be joined by another rookie this year in Tyler Booker from Alabama. We expect this youthful lineup to struggle, as most groups will, to keep their quarterback upright against the Philly defensive front. With Prescott also coming back from injury, it could lead to turnovers – especially a “scoop and score”.  Tip the Philadelphia defence to score a touchdown at 5/1 with Paddy Power Eagles vs Cowboys injury reportHere are all the key outs and doubts ahead of this week 1 matchup:Philadelphia EaglesOut: Nakobe Dean (linebacker) – knee, Lewis Cine (safety) – groinQuestionable: Landon Dickerson (guard) – back, Josh Uche (edge rusher) – undisclosed, Andrew Mukuba (safety) – hamstring, Tanner McKee (backup quarterback) – thumbDoubtful: N/ADallas CowboysOut: Shavon Revel Jr (cornerback) – ACL, Jonathan Mingo (wide receiver) – kneeQuestionable: Perrion Winfrey (defensive lineman) – backDoubtful: N/A Eagles vs Cowboys game infoDate: Friday 5th SeptemberTime: 1:15am BSTVenue: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaWhere to watch: Sky Sports NFLAbout the authorNathan HillNathan Hill is an experienced sports writer who obsessively follows football – both the round ball and American kind – as well as range of other sports including F1, basketball, darts and snooker.Commercial content notice: Taking one of the bookmaker offers featured in this article may result in a payment to talkSPORT. 18+.
