Everyone in my generation knows which watch went to the moon first. This article gives you the details of which knife will go to the Moon, so you can tell your grandchildren. In fact, I have the same model in my car for emergencies, so I feel a lot safer now. Benchmade Knife Company is set to play a role in upcoming lunar missions, as this knife has been selected for use by NASA astronauts during the Artemis program. The model chosen is the Benchmade 916SBK-ORG Triage, which will be issued to crew members as part of the Orion Crew Survival System (OCSS). Each astronaut aboard Artemis II will carry the knife during the mission, marking its first use in space. Image from National Aeronautics and Space Administration Artemis II is planned as a crewed flight around the Moon, with a four-person team operating the Orion spacecraft over a mission duration of approximately ten days. Being a little ahead, I already have two of these Benchmade Triages, bought some 8 years ago. One being automatic (not sure Benchmade offers them today - even the hook is auto), for fun and one in orange, which is always in one of my cars or range bags. According to Benchmade, the Triage was selected to provide additional functionality in a spaceflight environment, particularly when used with pressurized gloves. The knife’s design includes a large grip and a blunt-tip blade profile, intended to support safer handling and reduce the risk of accidental punctures. A built-in strap cutter adds another layer of utility for emergency scenarios. Hopefully, the Astronauts won't have to disassemble theirs, but here’s how it looks: The blade is made from corrosion-resistant N680 steel and uses an opposing bevel design, prioritizing toughness and controlled cutting performance. The partially serrated edge is intended for cutting tougher materials such as straps or fabric. The knife also features Benchmade’s AXIS lock system, allowing one-handed operation, along with G10 handle scales designed to maintain grip under challenging conditions. A folding hook made from 440C stainless steel is integrated for cutting cords and webbing without exposing the primary blade. NASA plans to include the Triage in future Artemis missions as well, indicating a standardized approach to crew survival tools within the Orion system. While knives have historically been included in survival kits for spaceflight, this selection highlights the continued refinement of equipment tailored to modern mission requirements. With Artemis aiming to return humans to lunar orbit and beyond, the inclusion of tools like the Triage reflects the practical considerations of crew safety and emergency preparedness in space operations. This question might be quite hypothetical for most of our readers, but what features would you prioritize in a “space-rated” knife? Where I live, carrying a knife has been banned in most places, but I think they haven’t banned carrying a knife on space ships and on the Moon just yet?If you want the same, get yours here: https://www.benchmade.com/collections/triage-family Benchmade Triage Knife Buy on Optics Planet We are committed to finding, researching, and recommending the best products.
