USMNT drops to No. 16 in FIFA Rankings following March defeats

The U.S. men’s national team’s pair of March defeats cost them in the first FIFA Rankings of 2026. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad dropped one spot to No. 16 in April’s rankings, FIFA announced Wednesday. The decision comes just one day after the USMNT suffered a second-straight loss to begin the new year.Belgium routed the USMNT 5-2 on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium before Portugal handed the Americans a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday at the same venue. Weston McKennie and Patrick Agyemang scored the lone goals for the Americans in their pair of international friendlies. Mexico became the highest-ranked CONCACAF nation, leapfrogging the USMNT into No. 15 overall. El Tri tied Portugal 0-0 on Saturday before also drawing Belgium 1-1 on Tuesday. Canada, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Jamaica round out CONCACAF’s top-six highest ranked nations. France became the new No. 1 ranked team which led to Spain and Argentina dropping to No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. England, Portugal, Brazil, Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, and Germany rounded out the Top 10 overall. The USMNT’s next opportunity to improve their ranking will come in May with home friendlies against Senegal and Germany respectively.
