The Kentucky Oaks TDN Top 10 for Apr. 2: Will Zany Live Up to Her Top Billing?

Wait 5 sec.

The long run of preps for the GI Kentucky Oaks will come to a close this weekend as the last of the 3-year-old filly preps will be run. All eyes will be on Keeneland Friday as the track will host the only Grade I prep for the Oaks, the GI Ashland Stakes. The favorite will be Zany (American Pharoah), who hasn't been out since the Feb. 7 Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Should she win, she will most likely be the favorite come May 1 at Churchill Downs. So, here goes, your latest Top 10:1) ZANY (American Pharoah–Mo' Green, by Uncle Mo) O-Repole Stable; B-D.J. Stable (KY); T-Todd Pletcher. Sales history: $350,000 yrl '24 FTSAUG. Lifetime Record: GSW, 3-3-0-0, $221,500. Last Start: WON Feb. 7 Suncoast Stakes. Kentucky Oaks Points: 30.Finally. The Todd Pletcher-trained filly will return to the races nearly two months after her win at Tampa Bay Downs in the Suncoast. She's owned the top spot in this poll since the first Top 10 appeared way back on Jan. 22, and will no doubt keep that spot should she come through in the Ashland. Pletcher loves this race, having won it with some really good fillies in Malathaat (Curlin), Nest (Curlin), and Leslie's Rose (Into Mischief). Malathaat went on to win the Oaks. The Ashland is never an easy race, and Zany may need to run better than she did at Tampa to win it. But it's very easy to see her improving off that race.2) LIFE OF JOY (Gun Runner–Jordan's Leo, by Malibu Moon) O-Will Stroud, Andrew Farm, Mountmellick Farm & For the People Racing Stable LLC; B-Springhouse Farm (KY); T-Brad H Cox. Sales history: $375,000 yrl '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: GSW, 5-3-1-0, $420,620. Last Start: Won Mar. 21 GII Fair Grounds Oaks. Kentucky Oaks Points: 122.As is always the case, Brad Cox is loaded with talented 3-year-old fillies. He won the race last year with Good Cheer (Medaglia d'Oro), who was his third Oaks winner since he captured the race with Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in 2018. In Life of Joy, he has an improving Gun Runner filly who looked good winning the GII Fasig-Tipton Fair Grounds Oaks in her last start. But she was second behind Zany in her start before that in the Suncoast. Can she turn the tables on her formidable rival in the Kentucky Oaks?3) COUNTING STARS (Honor A.P.–Paynterbynumbers, by Paynter) O-West Point Thoroughbreds; B-HRH Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud (KY); T-Mark Casse. Sales History: $13,000 yrl '24 KEESEP; $150,000 2yo '25 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: MSW & GSW, 7-4-1-0, $972,606. Last Start: WON Mar. 27 GII Fantasy Stakes. Kentucky Oaks Points: 100.Her assignment became easier when Explora was scratched from the GII Fantasy after spiking a temperature. But take nothing away from this filly, who won the Fantasy in convincing fashion for Mark Casse over stablemate Search Party (Gun Runner). It's still a mystery as to what happened to her in the Martha Washington where she was beaten a whopping 60 1/4 lengths, but she's been good since, finishing second in the GIII Honeybee Stakes and winning the Fantasy. For horses of this era, she's run a lot lately, having made five starts since Dec. 14, all of them at Oaklawn. But she shouldn't have any problem handling the track at Churchill. She broke her maiden there by four lengths on Sept. 25.Counting Stars | Coady Media4) PROM QUEEN (Quality Road–Miss Bling Bling, by Tapit) O-Gary and Mary West; B-Gary & Mary West Stables. Inc. (Ky); T-Brad H Cox. Lifetime Record:GSW, 3-2-1-0, $206,980. 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard.' Last Start: WON Mar. 28 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks. Kentucky Oaks Points: 100.Another Cox monster. Coming off a maiden win at Gulfstream, she had a lot to prove in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks. She definitely came through, sitting just off a slow pace before pouncing in the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths. A Quality Road homebred from the team of Gary and Mary West, she's the first foal out of the mare Miss Bling Bling (Money Game), who is by Tapit. Distance should be no problem. It's been 10 years since Castellano has won the Oaks, a feat he pulled off in 2016 with the Maryland-bred Cathryn Sophia (Street Cry).5) EXPLORA (Blame–Collections Choice, by Bernardini) O-Michael Pegram, Karl Watson & Paul Weitman; B-Mesingw Farm (KY); T-Bob Baffert. Sales History: $22,000 yrl '24 KEESEP; $350,000 2yo '25 FTMMAY. Lifetime Record: GSW & MGISP, 7-4-3-0, $1,053,000. 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard.' Last Start: Won Mar. 1 GIII Honeybee Stakes. Kentucky Oaks Points: 95.Have to drop Explora a few spots. It's not that she has done anything wrong, but she did miss a key prep when Bob Baffert had to scratch her from the Fantasy due to her running a temperature. The Oaks, like the GI Kentucky Derby, is a very hard race to win and it takes an exceptional horse to overcome any bumps in the road. Baffert will have to work some magic, but the filly could not be in better hands.6) MEANING (Gun Runner–Figure of Speech, by Into Mischief) O-Bridlewood Farm & Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners; B-Stonehaven Steadings (KY); T-Michael McCarthy. Sales history: $440,000 yrl '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: SW, 3-2-0-0, $187,000. Last Start: Won Feb. 8 Las Virgenes Stakes. Kentucky Oaks Points: 26.She's the 3-5 morning line favorite in Saturday's GII Santa Anita Oaks, which looks to be a little low considering there are some serious rivals in there. It will be a big race for the Michael McCarthy-trained filly. We keep pointing out that she had a dream trip in her win in the Las Virgenes. That will quickly become a moot point should she win the Santa Anita Oaks. Is she the best 3-year-old filly in California? We'll find out Saturday.Meaning | Benoit7) BELLA BALLERINA (Street Sense–Pretty City Dancer, by Tapit) O/B-Godolphin (KY); T-Brendan P Walsh. Lifetime Record: MGSW, 4-3-1-0, $561,525. 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard.' Last Start: Second Mar. 21 GII Fair Grounds Oaks. Kentucky Oaks Points: 110.She's a tough read. After winning her first three races, she looked as good as anyone in this division. That changed when she was second behind Life of Joy in the Fair Grounds Oaks, losing by 3 3/4 lengths. Did she just have an off day or is she not as good as we thought? She's trained by Brendan Walsh and is a half-sister to 2023 Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief), who was also trained by Walsh. She came back to win the Kentucky Oaks after also finishing second in the Fair Grounds Oaks. Maybe a case of deja vu?8) BOTTLE OF ROUGE (Vino Rosso–Blues Corner, by Bluegrass Cat) O-Natalie J Baffert; B-Kathie Maybee (Ky); T-Bob Baffert. Sales History: $60,000 wnlg '23 KEENOV; $100,000 yrl '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: GISW, 6-4-1-0, $577,000. Last Start: Won Mar. 14 Virginia Oaks. Kentucky Oaks Points: 57.50.Hasn't exactly been taking on monsters, but she knows how to win. Masterfully managed by Baffert, she's coming off back-to-back wins in the Sunland Park Oaks and the Virginia Oaks. Come Kentucky Oaks day, she'll have to answer the class question.9) FORCED ENTRY (Charlatan–Violent Times, by Violence) O-Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman; B-Stoneriggs Farm (Ky); T-Bob Baffert. Sales History: $375,000 yrl '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: GSW, 3-2-0-0, $102,500. Last Start: WON Mar. 8 GIII Santa Ysabel Stakes. Kentucky Oaks Points: 50.She's the second choice in the line in the Santa Anita Oaks at 4-1. She loses jockey Juan Hernandez, who will ride Meaning, but gets a more-than-able substitute in Mike Smith. After not running a step when trying grass in her debut, she's won two straight, including the GIII Santa Ysabel Stakes. On the Beyer figures, she's a little faster than Meaning. She is a major player in the Santa Anita Oaks.Forced Entry | Benoit10) PERCY'S BAR (Upstart–Honestly Deb, by Super Saver) O-Hat Creek Racing; B-Brereton C. Jones (Ky); T-Ben Colebrook. Sales History: $52,000 yrl '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: SW & MGISP, 5-2-2-1, $555,933. Last Start: Third in Oct. 31 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Kentucky Oaks Points: 14.Welcome back. We haven't seen the $52,000 Keeneland September purchase since she ran third in the Oct. 31 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, and now she goes in the Ashland. She's had four straight bullet workouts, so it looks like trainer Ben Colebrook has done his very best to get her ready. But trying to win the Ashland against a horse like Zany and after a lengthy layoff won't be easy. She can run. But will she be ready? The post The Kentucky Oaks TDN Top 10 for Apr. 2: Will Zany Live Up to Her Top Billing? appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
